Simon: How was your week?
Alexandra: I’m exhausted! My secretary Yvonne handed in her notice on Monday and I’ve been interviewing applicants for the position all week.
Simon: But she’s not leaving straight away, right? How much notice did she give?
Alexandra: Two weeks.
Simon: Only two weeks? Why is she quitting?
Alexandra: Her daughter Millie is really ill and has to be hospitalised for the next six months or so. Yvonne is going to stay in the hospital with her.
Simon: Oh that’s too bad! I guess there’s not much you can do about that then.
Alexandra: No, but she’s really left me in the lurch. I don’t think I’m going to be able to find a suitable replacement in time. Yvonne is such a great secretary. She’s going to leave some big boots to fill.

"suitable"は「ピッタリの、適した」。
"replacement"は「後任者」。
"in time"は「間に合って」。

"leave big boots to fill"を直訳すると、「いっぱいにするには大きな長靴を残す」。そこから転じて「後任者は大変な思いをする」となります。あまり頻繁につかわれる表現ではないようです。
