Peg: (in a loud whisper) Hal! Hal! Wake up. There’s something outside the door.

Hal: What? What are you talking about?

Peg: There’s someone outside the door. I heard a noise, a rattling noise.

Hal: I don’t hear anything.

Peg: Well, you can’t hear it now. It happened just a few minutes ago.

(the bedroom door rattles)

Peg: There it is again. Oh, Hal, do something. Call the police.

Hal: Hang on. Let’s not do anything too drastic. I’ll check and see what it is. (goes and opens the door)

Peg: What is it? Is anyone there?

Hal: You’re unbelievable. You know who your mysterious intruder is? The wind.

Peg: Huh?

Hal: That’s right. The hall window’s open, and the wind is shaking the door.

Peg: Well, how am I supposed to know that? It sure sounded like someone was in the house.

Hal: You shouldn’t let your mind play tricks on you. Anyway, the next time you hear a strange noise, check it out first before you wake me up.
