Emma is talking to her brother Larry when she notices something new in his house.
Emma: Is this a new safe? What do you need this for? Storing your fortune?
Larry: I had it installed last week. I bought a gun –
Emma: You what?!
Larry: I bought a gun. A twenty-two calibre pistol. Anyway, I had the safe installed so that it could be stored properly.
Emma: Stored properly? Larry, what do you need a gun for?
Larry: Well, since the break-in a couple of months ago, I haven’t felt too safe. Molly’s been having the same feeling.
Emma: Buy an alarm, Larry. Look, I know you were shaken up by the burglary, but you were on vacation when it happened. The chances of someone coming into your house while you’re home are pretty small. Having a gun around spells nothing but trouble.
Larry: We got an alarm, too. I know you think the gun is a bad idea, but I just feel safer having it around. And I plan to keep it locked up and out of harm’s way.
Emma: I hope you know what you’re doing, Larry. Because I don’t think you’ll think that gun is such a good idea if someone you love gets hurt with it.
Larry: That’s not going to happen.
Emma: I hope you’re right.

"What 〜 for?"で「何故〜？」と理由を尋ねる疑問文になります。"Why"でも同じ意味になりますが、この場合は"for"はつきません。"Why...?"="What... for?"と覚えておきましょう。

"chances of 〜 are high/low"の形で、「〜の可能性は高い/低い」となります。

「ピストルなんかもってたって、問題を起こすだけよ」
"spell"には「〜という結果になる」という意味があります。通常、好ましくない結果で、"spell disaster"（大被害をもたらす）のように使います。
ex: Human development has spelled disaster for many wild animals.
（人間の発達によって、多くの野生動物が大被害を受けた）

「ちゃんとロックして安全な場所においておくつもりだし」
"out of harm's way"は熟語で「安全な場所に」という意味。"harm"（害）から out of（それる）ということです。
ex: If you are going to handle a baby bird be sure to place it out of harm's way
（ひな鳥を世話するときは、ちゃんと安全な場所においてあげましょう）

Emma: 自分がしてることをわかって欲しいわ、ラリー。もし好きな人がピストルで事故にあったら、ピストルをもつのがそんなにいい考えだとは思えないはずよ。
Larry: そんなこと起きっこないやい。
Emma: だといいけど。
