H: This city is getting worse and worse by the day.
J: What do you mean?
H: I mean we had another stabbing last night. Some kid had a
disagreement with a man on the street, and whipped out a knife and
stabbed him.
J: That’s awful. Is the man alright?
H: Well, it says here that he’s in critical condition, but he’s
expected to recover.
J: I don’t understand what drives these kids today to be so violent.
H: It’s all that loud music and violent video games. Do you have any
idea how graphic that stuff is?
J: Just because you don’t approve of it Hank, doesn’t make it the
one and only cause. There are a lot of other problems besides
gratuitous violence in music, movies, and video games.
H: Don’t get started with all that “nobody loves me” wishy-washy
liberal crap. Young kids today lack direction. They need discipline.
They need to get out there and do something with their lives. Too
many people allow their teens to live spoiled, cushy lives that they
waste on mindless, violent entertainment.
J: Is that so? As I recall, didn’t your favourite movie used to be
The Terminator, until you replaced it with Terminator 2?
H: So? They’re classic movies. Besides, they’re so obviously fiction.
J: Maybe. And didn’t your father pay for a European tour after you
dropped out of university because you needed time to “find
yourself”?
H: That’s different. I went on a quest to find my true calling in
life.
J: Eating space cookies in Amsterdam?

“by the day" は、「日に日に、日ごとに」という意味。“more 〜 by the day"（日に日に〜なっていく）という形で良く使われている。何かが少しずつ変化することを示す表現。
Ex. His French is getting better and better by the day.
(彼のフランス語は、日に日に進歩している。)

「ああいうのが、どんなに露骨か分かるか？」
“Do you have any idea how 〜 something is?" は、「〜がどんなに〜か分かる？」という意味。 “Do you know how 〜 something is?" という言い方に似ているが、 “any idea" の方が相手に自分の考えを強く伝えたい場合に使う。
Ex. Do you have any idea how dangerous bungee jumping is?
（あなたは、バンジージャンプがどんなに危険かわかる？）

（意味のない暴力の他にいろんな問題があるわよ。）
“there are other 〜 besides 〜" は、「〜の他に〜がある」という意味。“aside from," “apart from," “other than" ともいう。
Ex. There are other people you can take besides him.
（彼の他に連れていける人は何人もいるよ。）
As I recall, didn't your favourite movie used to be The Terminator
（確かあなたの一番好きな映画は、ターミネーター）
“as I recall" は、「確か、そういえば、今思い出すと」という意味。自分が思いだしたことを相手に伝える時に使う。
Ex. As I recall, there used to be a service station on that corner.
（確か、昔あの角にガススタンドがありました。）

あるわよ。
H:「誰も私を愛してない」なんて、弱々しい、被害妄想的なくだらない事は
やめてほしい。今の若者たちには、将来の目的がない。忍耐力が必要。彼ら
は、社会に出て、人生に意味を見いだす必要がある。 あまりにも多くの人
が、10代の子供たちに、楽で甘やかした生活を与えている。そして、それ
を、闇雲で暴力的なエンターテイメントで無駄にしている。
J: あっ、そう?確かあなたの一番好きな映画は、ターミネーター2、その前
は、ずっとターミネーターだったよね。
H: だから?あの映画は大作だよ。それに、どう見ても作り話だろ。
J: まあね。そして、あなたが、自分探しをするために大学を退学したとき、
あなたのお父さんは、ヨーロッパ旅行のお金を出したわよね。
H: それは違うよ。僕は、自分の人生の役目を探しに行ったんだよ。
