M: Melanie
G: Griff
M: Sorry I’m late honey. I’ve been on the phone all afternoon
with Tonia.
G: What’s the matter this time? Don’t tell me ? they’ve had
another flaming row, right?
M: Yep. She called up in a flood of tears because Darren finally
walked out on her. He’s been threatening to leave for ages but
I don’t think she ever imagined he would actually do it.
G: If you ask me, it’s long overdue. I don’t know how the guy has
been able to put up with Tonia’s insecurities for so long.
M: Yeah, she can be emotional at the best of times. But she is a
lovely girl at heart and she has tried to work hard at her
marriage.
G: That may be so, but she was always taking out her frustrations
on Darren, poor guy. He’s handled it well up till now but I
think the fact that he’s finally left her is a pretty sure sign
that that marriage is kaput.
M: I hate to say it, but I think you’re right.

"Don't tell me"はこの場合「言わないで」という意味。"Don't tell
me"の後に来る文章は疑問形で、「〜でしょう？」という風に
人文の予想を確認する。"Don't tell me"はほかにも「まさか〜
じゃやない）、まあいやだ」や「本当だ」という意味もある。
Ex: Don't tell me - your mother's coming to stay, isn't she?
（言わないで・・君のお母さんが泊まりにくるんじゃないだろう？）
She called up in a flood of tears.
（大泣きして電話を掛けてきたの。）
"in a flood of tears"は「大泣きして」という意味。"flood"は
「洪水、殺到」という意味で、 "a flood of 〜"は「膨大な〜、
〜が殺到する、山のような〜」という意味。
Ex: The speaker had a flood of questions from the audience.
（演説者は、聴衆から質問の洪水を受けた。）
But she is a lovely girl at heart
（だけど、本当は可愛い子だし）
"at heart"は「本当は、内心は、心底、根は、根本的には、腹の中は」
という意味。他に"heart"を使ったイディオムには、"by heart"
「暗記して、そらで」、"heart and soul"「身も心も打ち込んで、
熱心に」、"have a heart"「やさしくする、同情する、理解する」、
"take heart"「元気をだす」などがある。
Ex: The manager can be mean, but at heart, he is nice guy.

the fact that he's finally left her is a pretty sure sign that that marriage is kaput.
（彼が遂に彼女を捨てたということは、この結婚生活が終わりだって

"kaput"は「終わった、ぶち壊された、ダメになった、故障した、役に
立たなくなった」という意味。ドイツ語からきている。他には、
"broken down", "ruined", "done"などの言い方がある。
Ex: Our weekend plans went kaput when my husband was called
into work.
（夫が仕事に呼ばれたため、私たちの週末の予定は駄目になった。）

してたよ、可哀想なやつだ。彼は今まで上手く対処してたけど、
彼が遂に彼女を捨てたということは、この結婚生活が終わりだっていう、
間違いない証拠だと思うよ。
