P: Hey, did you catch the world cup final on Monday?
B: No way! What was it, 3am? Too late to stay up, and too early to
wake up for, especially on a Monday morning!
P: Yeah, me too. I saw the highlights on TV later in the morning.
Did you see Zidane lose his cool?
B: Geez, what was he thinking?! That probably cost France the game.
P: Yeah, but if that Italian guy really did say something to him,
about his mother, sister or whatever, then I don’t really blame
him.
B: Yeah, well…what did you think of Japan’s games?
P: I dunno. People are blaming the coach, but that’s very easy to
do. At the end of the day, I hate to say it, but I think the
players just weren’t up to it.
B: If you think about it, Japan doesn’t have such a long history
in the game as other countries do, like Brazil, so they’ve done
pretty well in recent years.
P: And I’m sure they’ll get better too. Maybe they should start
encouraging Brazilian immigrants.
B: No, you mean Italians!

No way!
（とんでもない！）
"No way!"はこの場合「とんでもない、何を馬鹿なことを言っているの」
という意味。他にも「絶対に嫌だ、まさか、そんな馬鹿な、そんなこと
信じられない、うそでしょ」などの意味でも使われる。
Ex: "Do you want to try skydiving?"
"No way! I'm afraid of heights."
「スカイダイビングをやってみたい？」
「どんでもない！私、高所恐怖症よ。」

"lose one's cool"は「激怒する、カッとなる、冷静さを失う、
理性を失う、慌てる、取り乱す」という意味。他には"lose one's
temper", "go up the wall", "become out of control",
"blow a fuse", "get mad"などの言い方もある。"cool"は
「冷たい、涼しい」という意味から、「冷静な、落ち着いた、
無愛想な、冷淡な」という意味も持つ。
Ex: I lost my cool when he insulted me.
（私は、彼に侮辱されて、激怒した。）
At the end of the day, I hate to say it, but I think the players just weren't up to it.
（結局は、言いたくないけど、選手達にはちょっと無理だったと思うの。）
"be up to"はこの場合「（期待に）添うように、（責任を）果す
ように、（才能などを）十分に発揮して」という意味。その他、
「（よくないことを）計画している最中である、〜次第で、〜手がけて、
〜以下の、〜に至るまで、最大で、合致して、義務で」など様々な意味
がある。
Ex: The boss hinted that I might be promoted to manager, but I
don't think I'm up to the job.
「上司が、マネジャーに昇進することをほのめかしたけど、僕は
その仕事には向いてないよ。」

P: それに、きっともっと良くなるはずよね。多分、ブラジル移民の
奨励を始めるべきだわ。
