M: Mum
A: Hey, got any grub?
M: Yeah, nice to see you too! There are some leftovers from my
lunch in the fridge somewhere. How was school?
A: Same old. Mr Potts is getting stressed about the mid-term exams.
He gave us a ton of homework.
M: Well, if he didn’t, he wouldn’t be doing his job now would he?
No soccer practice today?
A: No that’s tomorrow. Oh mum, I need a big, big, big favour.
We have a school ball in August and I need to rent a tux.
Can you help me with that?
M: I thought this would happen sooner or later. Sure I’ll help you
with the money, as long as you help around the house more.
You know you need to get a part-time job. All your friends have one.
A: Not all! Besides, there’s nothing out there. I don’t want to
deliver milk.

M: What about the supermarket? They’re always looking for fresh faces.
A: You gotta be kidding me! They pay peanuts. I’m just waiting for
the right job to come along.
M: You’ll be waiting until the cows come home Allan! You have to
start somewhere. You need a reference.
A: You can be my reference can’t you?
M: Not if you don`t start helping me out. You can start by
cleaning your room.
Explanations
そのまま使える便利なフレーズを覚えましょう。
★★ I thought this would happen sooner or later.
（遅かれ早かれいずれこうなると思ってたわ）
"sooner or later"は「いつかは、じきに、遅かれ早かれ」という意味。
単語の順番が日本語とは逆なだけで、表現は同じで分かりやすいですね。
"soon or late"とも言いますが、比較級での言い方のほうが一般的。
Ex: I knew Joanna would get married to him sooner or later.
（遅かれ早かれジョアンナが彼と結婚することは分かってたよ）
★★ They pay peanuts.
（バイト代めっちゃ安いし）
"peanuts"には「非常に少ないこと、取るに足りない金、微々たる金額」
「つまらない物（人）、ちっぽけなもの」のような意味もあります。
"pay peanuts"で「わずかな金額しか支払わない」となり、
"live on peanuts"で「わずかなお金で暮らす」となります。
文字通りに「ピーナッツしか払わない、ピーナッツで暮らしてる」ことを
考えると、どれだけ少ないか、という表現がすごく想像できますね〜（苦笑）。
Ex: If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.
（低賃金ではまともな労働者は雇えない）
★★ You'll be waiting until the cows come home Allan!
（アラン、永久に待っているようになるわよ！）
"until(till) the cows come home"は「牛がのろのろだらだら牛舎に
戻ってくるまで」→「ずっと、長い間、いつまでも、永久に」ということ。
これもなんとなくのんびりした絵が頭に浮かびますね。類語としては
"forever"、"endlessly"などがあります。
Ex: I wonder if Melissa and John can go on loving each other
until the cows come home.
（メリッサとジョンはお互いにずっといつまでも愛し合い続けられるのかなぁ）

英文と比較して内容をしっかり確認しましょう。
アランはちょうど学校から帰ったばかり。スクールダンスのお金を出してくれ
るよう母親に頼んでいる。そしてアルバイトについて話し合っている。

M: ええ、ちょうどよかった!冷蔵庫にお昼の残りが入ってるわよ。

A: いつもと同じだよ。ポッツ先生が中間試験のことで(ストレス)キテるよー。
山ほど宿題出すしさぁ。
M: でもまぁ先生が宿題出さないとしたら、自分の仕事してないってことでしょ?
今日はサッカーの練習ないの?
A: うん明日。あ、母さん、大〜事な大〜事なお願いがあるんだけど。
8月に学校のダンスパーティーがあって、タキシードを
レンタルしないとなんだ。援助してもらえる?
M: 遅かれ早かれいずれこうなると思ってたわ。もちろんお金出してあげるわよ、
もっと家のこと手伝ってくれさえすればね。バイトしないとだわね。
あなたの友達はみんなやってるわ。
A: みんなじゃないよ!それに外じゃすること何もない。
牛乳配達なんてイヤだからね。
M: スーパーはどう?いつも新しい人探してるわよ。
A: 冗談!バイト代めっちゃ安いし。俺は自分に合った仕事が出てくるのを
待ってるんだよ。
M: アラン、永久に待っているようになるわよ!どこかで始めなきゃ。

M: いいえ、母さんの手伝いを始めないなら、ならないわよ。自分の部屋掃除
から始めて構わないけど?
