S: I wonder what the peanuts are like in First Class.
D: Yeah, probably extra-salted!
S: And we just get the plain-salted! So are you going on holiday
or are you working in Japan?
D: I’m actually just about to start a teaching job, one year contract.
I’ll be living somewhere in Tokyo, but they haven’t filled me in yet.
Yourself?
S: I’m coming over for a friend’s wedding. It’s in Shibuya,
is that right? I don’t know the pronunciation. I don’t really
have a tongue for languages.
D: Beats me! I’m in the same boat. I’ve learned some basic phrases and
greetings and all that, but it’ll take me a while.
S: I got hold of one of those train maps, and I can’t make head or
tail of it! So many train lines intersecting each other, what a mess!
D: So how long are you staying? Planning on doing any sightseeing?
S: Just four days. The wedding is on Sunday, so at least I can hang out
with my mates before then. I think he’ll just show me the sights,
you know, the PUBS!
D: Oh, my name’s Diane by the way.
S: Sean, hi. Let me see if I can get some extra peanuts.

そのまま使える便利なフレーズを覚えましょう。
★ I'll be living somewhere in Tokyo, but they haven't filled me in yet.
（東京のどこかに住むんですけど、まだ詳しく聞かされてないんですよ）
"will be 動名詞〜"は「これから〜する予定だ」ということで、
することが決まっていて、それもそんなに遠くない未来（これから）、
というような時間感覚です。既にこの予定（計画）は動き出し進行して
いるのです。"fill 人 in"は「〜について詳しく教える／聞かせる」
という意味です。
Ex: Fill me in on the IC ticket "PASMO".
（ＩＣ乗車券のパスモについて詳しく教えてください）
★★ I'm in the same boat.
（私も同様ですよ）
"be in the same boat"で「同じ立場／運命／境遇にある」
「行動／運命を共にする」という意味。同じボートに乗ったら確かに状況や
運命は一緒ですね。ちょっと違いますが他に、"join the club!"＝
「（私たちと）同じ境遇ですね！」「こちらも同様です」という

Ex: We are all in the same boat, so have to find a solution
to the problem.
（私達は皆同じ境遇にあるのだから、一緒にその問題の解決策を
見つけなければね）
★ I got hold of one of those train maps, and I can't make head or tail of it!
（それの電車路線図を入手したんだけど、何がなんだかさっぱり分からない！）
"get hold of"は「〜を手に入れる、〜をつかむ、〜を理解する」
などの意味があります。そして"make of it"は「判断する、解釈する、思う」、
"head or tail"は「頭かしっぽか」ということで、
"not make head or tail of it"とは「何がなんだかわからない、
曖昧だ、はっきりしない」という言い回しになります。
Ex: How do you think of his new work?
Um…to be honest, I can't make head or tail of it.

D: 全然分からない!私も同様ですよ。基本フレーズや挨拶とかなんとか、
そういったことは習ってるけどしばらく時間かかるでしょうね。
S: それの電車路線図を入手したんだけど、何がなんだかさっぱり分からない!
すごい数の路線が互いに交差してて、もう、なんてごちゃごちゃなんだ!
D: それでどれくらい滞在するんですか?観光する予定は?
S: 4日間だけです。結婚式は日曜だから少なくともそれまでは
仲間とぶらぶらできますよ。彼はただ名所を案内すると思いますね、
そう、パブですよ!
D: ああ、ところで私の名前はダイアンです。
S: ショーンです、どうも。ピーナツもっともらえるかどうかきいてみましょうね。
