日本語と英語の違い 敬語
「敬語」は日本語特有のもの、と思っていませんか。たしかに、日本語の敬語は独特ですが、英語にだって「敬語」はあります。では、日本語と英語の敬語の違いはどこにあるのでしょうか。

Ken: Yoko, is polite Japanese really difficult?
Yoko: Yeah, there’s respectful language, humble language and simply polite language…it’s very complicated.
Ken: Really? I heard there’s a special vocabulary for polite Japanese.
Yoko: That’s right. It’s quite different from polite English, isn’t it?
Ken: Yeah, we have things like, “Are you busy?” and “I was wondering if I could interrupt you,” but it’s more like combination of ordinary words, not special vocabulary.
Yoko: Right.
Ken: Do you find polite Japanese difficult, too?
Yoko: Um, sometimes.

一般的に「敬語」はpolite languageですが、日本語の「尊敬語」「謙譲語」「丁寧語」はそれぞれ、respectful language, humble language, simply polite language（「丁寧語」はcourteous languageと訳されることもあります）と訳せます。「日本語の敬語」であればpolite Japaneseですし、「フランス語の敬語」であればpolite Frenchです。

（英語だと"Are you busy?（忙しい？）" と "I was wondering if I could interrupt you.（お邪魔してもいいでしょうか、などと考えておりましたんですが）" とかの違いはあるけど、それはどちらかというと日常的な言葉の組み合わせの問題であって、特別な言葉、じゃないんだよね。）
ケンが指摘する通りです。日本語の場合は「食べる」「召し上がる」「いただく」など、それぞれの状況に応じて敬語として使われる言葉が変わってきますが、英語の場合は、「フォーマルな単語」「インフォーマルな単語」の違いこそあれ、「敬語ならではの単語」というのはあまりないようです。
"Are you busy?" と "I was wondering if I could interrupt you."の違いは訳に書いた通りですが、要するに、言葉数を多く、あいまいな表現を使い、過去形（特に過去進行形）を使うとよりていねいになる、という原則が英語にはあります。
