Ted goes to Mr. Stanley to talk about the letter, and surprisingly Mr. Stanley is less than sympathetic.

Ted: Can I talk to you?

Mr. Stanley: If this is about the letter, I think you should talk to Grace. She’s the one who wrote it.

Ted: No. I’m going to talk to you. Is this some kind of joke?

Mr. Stanley: I think, as does Grace, that your attitude is getting in the way of your performance.

Ted: What are you talking about!? I’m slaving over and keeping most of the big accounts for this section. And I’ve even managed to get both Gleason and Wabash to agree to long term contracts.

Mr. Stanley: That may be. But there are serious concerns about your professional behavior around the office. I’m especially concerned about your attitude toward Barbara.

Ted: You’re concerned? Or is Grace making you act concerned?

Mr. Stanley: Now you see here, I chose Barbara as the best candidate for the job. I expect people to respect their superiors. This is a team company, Rogers. If you can’t get with that, I’ve got to question your future at this company.

Ted: Well, you won’t have to question much longer, sir. Gleason, during our negotiation, offered me a position at their firm, which for me would also mean a promotion. In addition to that Wabash has agreed to continue working with me and with Gleason in the form of a joint-venture. And so when I go, they, and some of my other clients, go with me.

Mr. Stanley: You wouldn’t dare!

Ted: I would, sir, and I quit effective immediately. Congratulations, Mr. Stanley, you just lost a lot of business.

A few dialogues ago, Ted mentioned an offer from, Gleason, one of the big companies that he represents. Over the last few weeks that offer became guaranteed, and so Ted has stalled on making a decision until he could find an appropriate time to let his present company know. This whole incident with the letter has only prompted Ted to make his decision sooner. He goes to Mr. Stanley for one last appeal to try and clear his name over the issue at hand; however when he goes to Mr. Stanley it is evident that Mr. Stanley has taken Grace and Barbara's side. Having realized this Ted decides to play his trump card and formally quit right then and there. Through Ted, executives from the two big companies Wabash and Gleason, met and formed a business relationship. This relationship blossomed, and the two companies decided to work together on a major project. They want Ted to head their marketing campaign, but they wanted to bring him on board as an executive within one of the two companies. It would be a waste of time to have to keep going through Ted's old company as a kind middle man. In the end, this means a promotion, at last, for Ted, and a chance to have his talents recognized. It's also interesting how in the end Ted played the political game a little in order to get himself out of a tight spot.
ちょっと前のダイアログで、テッドは担当している大会社の一つ、グリーソンからの誘いのことを話していました。この数週間でその誘いが確約され、現在の会社に知らせる時機がくるまで、テッドは決断を先延ばしにしていたのです。今回の手紙事件そのものは、テッドに決断を早めるよう促す結果になりました。テッドはスタンレイ氏のところへ、当面の問題について彼の汚名を返上しようと最後の訴えをしに行きます。ところが、テッドがスタンレイ氏のところへ行くと、明らかに、スタンレイ氏はグレースとバーバラ側に立っています。このことがわかったので、テッドは切り札を使い、その場で正式に辞めることを決心します。テッドを仲介にして、２つの大会社ウォバシュとグリーソンの幹部社員は引き合わされ、取引関係を作り上げました。この関係が花開き、２社は、ある大きなプロジェクトで協力しあうことを決定しました。この２社は、販売促進活動をテッドに率いてほしいと考えていますが、どちらかの会社の役員として迎えたがっていました。仲介者としてテッドの今までの会社を通し続けなければならないのは時間のムダになるでしょうから。 結果として、これはテッドにとってようやくの昇格であり、彼の手腕が認められるチャンスということです。テッドが、窮地を脱するために最後の最後で、少しだけ政治的な駆け引きをしたこともおもしろいですね。
