Scene 7-5 上級 The Story of Miles & Sadie

A few days later, Sadie sees a strange man coming out of Miles' apartment and locking the door. Curious, she goes up to him to find out who he is.

Sadie: Excuse me. Hi. I’m Sadie. I live just down the hall.

Andy: Well, hi there, Sadie. My name’s Andy.

Sadie: Um, Andy, I don’t mean to be so forward, but what were you doing in Miles’ apartment? I mean, is he away or did he move out or something?

Andy: Oh, you didn’t hear?

Sadie: Hear what?

Andy: Miles was in an accident. He had a mild heart attack while driving the other day and crashed his cab into the side of the Front St. Bridge. Fortunately the heart attack was the only injury he sustained.

Sadie: Oh my god! I…I had no idea. I mean, I saw the report on TV the other day, but I didn’t realize that he was involved. I’m so sorry to hear that. That’s terrible.

Andy: Well, it’s not so bad. As I said, he wasn’t seriously hurt. He’s being discharged tomorrow. I just came by to drop off his things from his locker at the taxi depot. I work with Miles.

Sadie: But his heart…I mean…is he alright?

Andy: I’m afraid that’s a different story. His heart’s good for now, but the doctors are worried that his condition might worsen if he doesn’t start taking it easy. He’s been put on medical leave from the company. He should be ok, but this isn’t the first time this has happened. He needs to start taking better care of himself…I’m sorry, are you and he close?

Sadie: I…I wouldn’t say close…We’re neighbours. I mean, we’re sort of friends. I always talk to him whenever I see him in the hall, but we don’t really hangout or anything.

Andy: Huh. Well, if anyone likes to chat it’s old Miles. He’s got to be one of the friendliest guys I know. Anyway, he’ll be out tomorrow, so you might want to pop in and visit him sometime. He’ll probably be kinda lonely not being able to work and all.

Sadie: Ok. I will.

Andy: Alright, well, you take care now.

A few days later, Sadie sees a strange man coming out of Miles' apartment, and locking the door. A bit concerned about what might have happened to Miles, she approaches the man and asks him what he's doing there and where Miles is. It turns out that the man, Andy, is a friend of Miles' from work and he is just dropping off some of Miles' things. We learn here that Miles was involved in the accident from the previous dialogue, and that in fact the taxi mentioned in the news report was none other than the one that Miles was driving. The expression that Sadie uses at the beginning of the dialogue, "I don't mean to be so forward," is often used when you want to ask a rather personal question of someone you don't really know. In this case, Sadie wants to know what Andy is doing there, which implies that she is suspicious of him. In order to politely ask basically, "who the hell are you?", she prefaces her question with the above expression and chooses a slightly more cordial method of interrogation.

Andy: まあ、そんなにひどくないよ。言ったとおり、大けがしたわけじゃないから。明日退院するんだ。僕は、タクシー操車場のロッカーから彼の持ち物を置きに来ただけなんだ。マイルズとは同僚でね。

Sadie: でも彼の心臓は…あの…彼、大丈夫なの？

Andy: それはまた別の話だろうね。今のところ心臓は大丈夫だけど、医者は、ムリをして病状が悪くなることを心配してる。会社の方は医療休暇を取ってるんだ。今回は大丈夫だろうけど、こんなことはこれが初めてじゃないんだ。彼はもっと気をつけなくちゃいけない…失礼だけど、君、彼とは親しいの？

Sadie: 私…親しいってわけじゃ…近所同士なの。その、友達のようなものね。廊下で会ったら、いつも話しかけるけど、一緒に遊びに行ったりとかはまったくしないわ。

Andy: ふうん。まあ、マイルズおやじとおしゃべりするのが嫌じゃなければ。彼、僕の知り合いのなかでも一番人なつこい人間だよ。とにかく、明日には退院だから、また気軽に訪ねてやってよ。働いたりできなくて、多分ちょっと寂しいだろうから。

Sadie: わかったわ。そうします。

Andy: よし、じゃあ、よろしくね。
