Zoe: How was that flat you went to have a look at this morning?

Margot: Oh, it was nice.

Zoe: You don’t sound too enthusiastic. What were the people like?

Margot: Oh, they were lovely. Very nice people.

Zoe: But?

Margot: Well, I didn’t think flatting was going to be like this. They
have cooking rosters and cleaning rosters and… I can’t do any
of that!

Zoe: What did you think they were going to do? Feed you and clean
up after you like servants? Come on Margot, get real!

Margot: I…I just don’t think I can do it. I mean, I’ve never even
touched an oven before and I wouldn’t have a clue how to work
a vacuum cleaner. What if I make a mess of everything or even
worse, break my nails? And I’d hate to have people I didn’t
even know looking over my shoulder and telling me what to do
all the time.

Zoe: Oh dear. You are seriously beyond help, Margot. Flatting
isn’t going to work for you unless you do your share of the
work. Maybe you should flag the whole idea.

Margot: And do what? I can’t go back home. Where am I going to live?

Zoe: How about living alone? That way you won’t have to live by
other people’s rules and you can be independent of your
parents.

Margot: Well that sounds like a good idea, but it seems like a lot of
hard work to me.

Zoe: Margot, you’re going to have to take the plunge sometime, and
in your case, maybe its better that you did it alone. That way
you’ll be forced to do everything yourself instead of finding
someone else to do your chores for you. There’s nothing like
being thrown in at the deep end for getting quick results.

Margot: Yes, or drowning spectacularly.

Zoe: Look, a friend of mine lives in these great single apartments on
Orchard Road. They’re only a couple of years old and partly
furnished. Why don’t we go and take a look? She says there are
a couple of vacancies at the moment.

Margot: Weeeeeell, alright, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to look.
