Dig In
It is the second day of Elliot and Sara’s trip. They have caught the train from Christchurch to Blenheim and are taking a cruise in the Marlborough Sounds.
Dialog

Elliot: You were right about the weather getting warmer the further we
go north. The weather is perfect for cruising today!
Sara: Yeah. Isn’t this great? It’s so beautiful and peaceful here.
No cars, no electricity, no ugly buildings. Just hills, forests
and emerald green water as far as the eye can see.
Elliot: That was a great lunch too. I’m stuffed.
Sara: Yeah, those sandwiches were really filling. Just make sure you
have enough room for the mussels. The captain put on a big pot
of them a while back so they must be almost done now.
Elliot: Mmmm, I can smell them! Freshly harvested mussels ? I can’t
wait.
Sara: I thought you were stuffed?
Elliot: I always have room for seafood. Oh, here comes the captain now.
They must be cooked.
Captain: Well folks, would you care for some freshly steamed mussels?
Sara: We sure would!
Captain: Stand back and I’ll just put the pot down here. Now, do you know
what to do? Just open the shells and pull away this gristly part
before eating them. You can throw the shells back into the water
as you eat them. Don’t worry ? they’ll be naturally recycled so
you won’t be polluting.
Sara: Wow ? they look delicious!
Captain: Now, would anybody fancy a glass of wine?
Sara: That would be lovely.
Captain: I have Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Sara: A Chardonnay would be great thanks. How about you, Elliot?
Elliot: I’ll have a Chardonnay too, thanks.
Captain: Here you are folks. Dig in.
Elliot: Well, here’s to the Marlborough Sounds and good seafood!

そのまま使える便利なフレーズを覚えましょう。
Just hills, forests and emerald green water as far as the eye can see.
(まさに見渡す限り山、森林そしてエメラルドグリーンの海。)
(映画に夢中になってて、あなたが入ってくるのを気付かなかった。)
I’m stuffed.
(満腹。)
“stuffed”は、「詰まった、いっぱいになった」の他に「満腹」という意味もある。他にも普段使われている ”full” や “bursting”、“full up”という言い方もある。
Yeah, those sandwiches were really filling.
(えぇ、あのサンドイッチとても食べ応えがあったわ。)
“filling” は色々な意味があるが、こちらでは形容詞で「腹をいっぱいにする、食べ応えのある、満腹にさせる」という意味。動詞の “fill”「いっぱいにする」と関係ある。
Ex. That meal was filling.
(あの食事に満たされた。)
Just make sure you have enough room for the mussels.
(でもムール貝のスペースとっておきなさいよ。)
“room” は色々な意味があるが、ここでは「食べ物が入る場所」という意味になる。”I’m saving room for 〜”、“I’m leaving room for 〜” “I’m making room for 〜”「〜のためにスペースを取っておいている」というフレーズもある。
Ex. I always have room for dessert.
(デザートはいつも別腹です。)

(さあ、ワインはいかがですか?)

英語で乾杯をするときによく “here’s to 〜” 「〜がありますように、〜に乾杯、〜に幸いあれ」というフレーズを使うので覚えておくと便利。
Ex. Here’s to the happy couple!
(幸せなお二人のために乾杯!)

は最高の天気だね。
S: ねっ、すごくない?すごくきれいでのどかだわ。車も電気も不格好な建

E: 最高のランチも。満腹。
S: えぇ、あのサンドイッチとても食べ応えがあったわ。でもムール貝のス
ペースとっておきなさいよ。ちょっと前に船長が大きな鍋いっぱいのム
ール貝に火をかけたから、きっともう少しで出来上がりよ。
E: んんん〜〜、匂う〜。取れたてのムール貝。待ちきれないよ。
S: もうお腹いっぱいじゃなかったの?
E: いつでもシーフードは別腹なの。オ〜、船長が来たぞ。きっとできあがっ
たんだ。
C: 皆さ〜ん、新鮮な蒸ムール貝はいかがですか?
S: もちろん!
C: 下がってください。ここに鍋を置きますね。さて、どうやって食べるか
わかりますか?貝を開けて、食べる前にこの軟骨部分を引き離すだけです。
殻は食べたまま海に戻せばいいんです。心配しないで、自然に再生されま
すから環境汚染にはなりませんよ。
S: わぁ〜、美味しそう!
C: さあ、ワインはいかがですか?
S: すてきだわ。
C: シャルドネとソービニョン・ブランがあります。
S: シャルドネを頂くわ、ありがとう。エリオットは?
E: 僕もシャルドネにするよ、ありがとう。
C: 皆さん、どんどん召し上がってください。
E: マールボラサウンドと美味しいシーフードに!
