Ben: Wow hon, this meal looks great! How did you learn to cook
like this?

Scarlett: Actually, it’s part of my French study.

Ben: Huh? What does a five course meal have to do with studying
French?

Scarlett: Well, I was thinking of all the different things I could do
to study for my exam, and it crossed my mind that I should
combine my study with something I enjoy doing, and that way
I’d have much more fun and learn a heap.

Ben: So you combined it with cooking?

Scarlett: Yeah. Well, you know how I love to try new recipes,
and well, French cooking is up there with the best in
the world, so I looked up a few French cooking sites on
the internet and printed off a few recipes to try.

Ben: So the recipes were all in French?

Scarlett: Of course! I looked up all the words and phrases I didn’t
know and then tried the recipes out. I’ve been testing two
new recipes a week for the last month and they’ve all been
delicious, so I thought I’d treat you to a full course meal
to show you what I’ve learnt!

Ben: I am impressed! To tell you the truth, I didn’t think
you’d last two months in your French classes, but you’ve
definitely proved me wrong!

Scarlett: Well, I’m not the best French speaker in the world but I’ve
realised that you don’t have to be perfect to be able to
function in another language. At first I was so worried about
making mistakes that I was too uptight to use the French I was
learning, but now I’ve realised that it’s so much more fun if
I’m not so self conscious about messing up.

Ben: See, what did I tell you? But I guess you had to find that
out for yourself rather than take my word for it.

Scarlett: Yeah, it took me a while but I must admit you were right.
Well, there’s a lot of food here. Shall we dig in?

Ben: Great! I’m ravenous!
