Scene 7-7 Time for a Change

A month has passed. Miranda is frustrated after a day of staff interviews. She talks to Jon about her day.

Jon: Hey Miranda. You look exhausted. Tough day?
Miranda: You can say that again. Some of the applicants we had in for
interviews today were unbelievable!
Jon: Oh?
Miranda: One came in dressed like a punk. Her hair was in the biggest
Mohawk I’ve ever seen and twelve different colours! When Dean
tried to explain to her that she didn’t quite have the look that
we wanted for our staff, she gave him the finger and spent ten
minutes yelling insults!
Jon: You’re kidding!
Miranda: I’m serious! I thought we’d never get her out of the room.
Then there was this guy who demanded almost double of what I’m
being paid because he’d cut some movie star’s hair.
Jon: Oh yeah?
Miranda: Yeah, but it turns out it wasn’t a star at all. It was some guy
who played a really, really small supporting role in Lord of the
Rings, and he last cut the guy’s hair three years before the
movie was even made! Can you believe some people?
Jon: That’s crazy!
Miranda: And then there was this girl Shelley who was fired from her last
job for dying a client’s hair purple. Apparently she found out
the client was dating her ex-boyfriend, and decided to exact a
little revenge.
Jon: Scary!
Miranda: Tell me about it. I was beginning to wonder if we’d ever find
anyone suitable.
Jon: And did you?
Miranda: Well, we’ve asked four back for another interview next week and
we have another day of first-round interviews tomorrow, so
hopefully it’ll be OK. I just hope we can get everyone on board
as soon as possible, because there are a million things to be done
before we open, and we’re seriously short of people right now.
Jon: Don’t worry. I’m sure you’ll be ready in plenty of time.
You look like you need to unwind. What do you say we go out for
a couple of drinks?
Miranda: Oh, yeah! That sounds like just what I need!

(全くその通りよ。)
“You can say that again.”は「全くその通りだ、あなたのおっしゃる
とおり、まさにそのとおり、同感だ、言えてる」という意味。
“You(You've)said it.”も同じ意味。
Ex: You can say that again. It was really exciting movie.
(本当にそうね。すごく面白い映画だったわ。)

(その格好が私たちのスタッフに望んでいるものではないってことを説明しようとした時、彼女、ディーンに向かって中指を立てて)

“give someone the finger”は「(人に)向かって中指を立てる」
という意味で、人を侮辱する意味がある。“flip off”は「中指を
立ててばかにする」という意味。
Ex: The unruly pupil gave the teacher the finger.
(悪がきは、先生に中指を立てて侮辱した。)
it turns out it wasn't a star at all.
(結局全然スターじゃなかったって分かったのよ。)
“turn out 〜”はここでは、「結局〜であることが分かった、〜という
ことが判明する、〜の結果になる、〜という状態で終わる、結局〜になる」
という意味。他には、「装う、盛装する、外へ曲がる、起床する、
出掛ける、集まる、出席する、進行する、(明かり)などを消す、
裏返しにする、処分する、暴露する」など様々な意味がある。
Ex: She turned out to be mean.
(彼女は結局意地悪だった。)
Tell me about it.
(そうなのよ。)
“Tell me about it.”は「その通り、百も承知、(言われなくても)
良く分かっている」という意味。“Tell”を使った表現には、“You
tell them!”「まったくその通り」、“You can never tell.”
「どうなることやら/先のことはわからない」、“I'm telling you.”
「それはこっちのせりふだ」などがある。
Ex: “You look like you've had a rough day.” “Tell me about it.”
「今日は大変な日だったみたいね。」 「そうなのよ。」
we have another day of first-round interviews tomorrow,
(明日ももう一日一時面接がある)
“first-round”は「(スポーツなどの)一回戦」という意味で、この場合
は面接なので、一時面接という意味になる。名詞の“round”には「輪、
円形、繰り返し、連続、巡回、巡視、往診、一斉射撃、一回の給仕、
(繰り返される)期間」など様々な意味がある。
Ex: We won the first-round match.
(私達は、初戦を通過した。)
we're seriously short of people right now.
(今冗談抜きに人手が足りないの。)
“short of 〜”は「〜が足りない、〜に達していない、〜の手前で」
という意味。“short”は名詞の「短いもの」という意味の他に、「不足」
という意味がある。他には、“lack of 〜”, “shortness of 〜”,
“shortage of 〜”, “shortfall in 〜”などの言い方もある。

J: やあ、ミランダ。クタクタみたいだね。きつい一日だったの?
M: 全くその通りよ。今日の面接に来た志望者の何人かには、呆れたわ!
J: そう?
M: 一人はパンクみたいな格好で来たの。彼女のモヒカンは、私が今まで
見た中で一番大きかったし、12色だったのよ!ディーンが彼女に、
その格好が私たちのスタッフに望んでいるものではないってことを説明
しようとした時、彼女、ディーンに向かって指を立てて、侮辱的なこと
10分も怒鳴ったのよ!
J: 冗談だろ!
M: 本当よ!彼女を部屋から絶対出せないと思ったわ。そして、私が
もらってる給料の約二倍を要求した奴がいたの、なぜなら、ある映画
スターの髪を切ったことがあるからって。
J: そうなのかい?
M: そうなの、だけど、結局全然スターじゃなかったって分かったのよ。
ロード・オブ・ザ・リングの本当に本当に小さな脇役を演じた誰か
だったし、その人の髪を切ったのは、映画が作られる三年も前だったの!
こんな人たち信じられる?
J: おかしいよ!
M: そして、お客さんの髪を紫に染めて、前の仕事をくびになったシェリーっ
ていう子がいたの。どうも、彼女はそのお客さんが、彼女の前の彼氏と
付き合っていたことを知ってしまって、ちょっと復讐することにした
のよ。
J: 怖いな!
M: そうなのよ。適した人が見つかるかどうか疑問に思えてきたわ。
J: それで、見つけたんだろ?
M: 来週二次面接に来るように4人に頼んだし、明日ももう一日一時面接
があるから、上手くいくと良いね。ただ出来るだけ早く、皆を参加
させられるように期待するだけよ。オープン前に終わらせなきゃいけな
い事が山ほどあるんだから。それに、今冗談抜きに人手が足りないの。
J: 心配ないよ。きっとたっぷり余裕を持って準備出来るさ。リラックスする
必要があるみたいだね。ちょっと飲みに行くのはどうだい?
M: 本当!それこそまさに私に必要なことよ!
