Mom and apple pie stuff

Maria is complaining about her mother to Sharon, her friend.

Dialog

Maria: You know, my mom is a kind of person who would look at the glass half empty, not half full. I wish she could look on the brighter side of things instead of discouraging me against everything.

Sharon: She worries about you only because you mean so much to her…

Maria: But this is going way too far. Whenever I start anything…new job, new boyfriend, new apartment, whatever…she just gives me her “wisdom” which is full of don’ts, and never congratulates me on my new turn of life!

Sharon: She’s probably being a little too protective…

Maria: My relationship with her has been going through a rough patch for a while, and I don’t think I can take this any more.

Sharon: But did you tell her what you’ve just been telling me? Any kind of committed relationship has to be worked out between the two involved.

Maria: I know…but I just can’t bring myself to tell her all that when I think of her age and how much she has done for me…

Sharon: One thing we’ve got to remember is that we girls tend to be hard on our mothers. And I don’t want to sound patronizing, but we’ve got to see things from other people’s perspectives.

Explanations

a kind of person who would look at the glass half empty, not half full

I wish she could look on the brighter side of things.

look on the bright side of… Always look on the bright side of life…

You mean so much to her.

mean much to…

She just gives me her “wisdom” which is full of don'ts.

逆に、do(複数形はdo's)は「〜すべき」、するべきこと。
Ex) Here are some do's and don'ts for this task.

My relationship with her has been going through a rough patch for a while.

go through a rough patchは「難局をくぐる、不運な目に会う」ということ。

I don't think I can take this any more.

cannot take … any moreで「もう我慢できない」。

committed relationship

I just can't bring myself to tell her all that when I think of her age and how much she has done for me…

can't bring oneself to… how much she has done for meとありますが、これはforを使っていますから「彼女が私のためを思ってやってくれたこと」という意味になります。

I don't want to sound patronizing.

I don't want to sound…
Ex) I don't want to sound rude, but…
