「エコバッグ」って英語?
最近はやりのエコバッグ。英語でもそう言うのかなぁ?greenの「みどり」以外の意味、知ってますか?「エコ」満載の会話です。

Maria and her friend Sharon are on their way to a supermarket.
Sharon: Maria, here’s something I wanted to show you…a shopping bag from my favorite designer!
Maria: Hey, that’s cool.
Sharon: With this bag, I can stroll the streets without showing pads I’ve bought at drugstores. Good-bye, plastic bags! How green are you, by the way?
Maria: I can’t say I do much…do you think we should switch to cloth pads?
Sharon: Considering the amount of water and detergent you use to wash cloth pads, it would be wiser to stick to paper ones…that’s what I heard.
Maria: Oh, I thought cloth ones would do our planet earth a lot of good!
Sharon: In other words, we need to be correctly informed to be correctly green.
Maria: Where did you get that information about water and detergent?

今回は「エコ」(green)の話です。日本語ではエコバッグという言葉が市民権を得ていますが、英語では日本語ほどeco bagという言葉を耳にしません。今回シャロンが見せびらかしているのは「エコバッグ」です。eco (ecologicalの略)という言葉も日本語とは用法が異なります。eco-tour, eco-carなど、形容詞的にハイフンを用いて使うことはありますが、日本語のように「あなたってエコね」(You're eco?)「それってすごいエコ」(That's very eco?)とは言いません。

(ところでマリアはどれっくらいエコなの?)
greenには「未熟な」という意味もありますが、ここでは「エコ」という意味で使っています。
Do you think we should switch to cloth pads?
(布のナプキンに変えるべきだと思う?)
エコがらみで最近再び注目を浴びているのが布おむつと布ナプキン。どちらもrecyclable diapers/padsとも言えます。しかし、手洗いでもしない限り、かえって地球に優しくない、という説もあるそうです。
