何か、成し遂げたとき、結果は今ひとつだったけどがんばった時…自分にご褒美、あげたくなりますよね。英語ではなんと言うのでしょう?

Sharon: Do you think it’s stupid to spend $500 on a single pair of shoes?
Maria: $500? Wow, certainly I would never spend that much on shoes.
Sharon: Hmm…I knew you’ d say something like that.
Maria: Why do you ask?
Sharon: You see, I had several job interviews in the last few weeks, and though I haven’t been successful, I just wanted to pamper myself. You know, for trying that much.
Maria: That’s understandable.
Sharon: You mean to spend $500?
Maria: No, to pamper yourself.

a pair of shoesでも「靴一足」なのですが、singleをつけると、「複数ではなく、ひとつ(一足)だけ」ということが強調されます。

pamperは「甘やかす」という意味なので、pamper oneselfで「思い通りにする、ご褒美をあげる」となります。pamper yourselfという表現はよく、ホテルなどの宣伝文句に使われています。(Ex: Pamper yourself with a stay at one of our luxury hotels. 訳:私どもの高級ホテルにご宿泊いただいて、ご自分にご褒美を。)「〜を買って自分のごほうびにする」ならtreat oneself to 〜。
Ex) I treated myself to a huge piece of chocolate cake.
