Lauren is meeting her friend Justin for lunch. When Justin arrives, he is looking rather depressed.

Lauren is meeting her friend Justin for lunch. When Justin arrives, he is looking rather depressed.
Lauren: Hi, Justin. You’re looking a little down in the dumps. What’s the matter?
Justin: Well, you know how I’ve always wanted to trek across India?
Lauren: Yeah. You’ve been going on about doing that for ages.
Justin: Well, a golden opportunity came up last week. My friend Sam is going early next year and he wanted someone to travel with.
Lauren: But that’s great news isn’t it? You finally get to live your dream!
Justin: That’s what I thought too. But when I told Mum, she hit the roof! She said there was no way she was going to let me leave university for a year to go wandering around a dangerous place like India.
Lauren: So, what are you going to do?
Justin: Well, I’ll let the matter lie for the moment, but I won’t give up until she lets me go!

「ちょっと落ち込んでるみたいね」
"down in the dumps"は、「落ち込んでいる」という意味。他の表現として"down in the mouth," "gloomy," "unhappy" という言い方もあります。

「ずっと前からそんな話をしてたよね」
"going on about... "は、「〜についていっぱい話す」という意味。
ex: What are you going on about?

「ついに夢が実現するんでしょう！」
"live one's dream"は「夢が実現する」という意味。"live"を使うほかのフレーズは、"live through"(〜を切り抜けて生き延びる)、"live from hand to mouth"（その日暗しをする）などがあります。

「おふくろに話したら、激怒しちゃったんだよ!」
"hit the roof"は、「激怒する」という意味。他に言い方として"lose your temper," "see red," blow one's top," "go mad," などもあります。

「とりあえずこの話しはほっとくけど」
"let the matter lie"は、物事（matter）を寝かせておく（let 〜 lie）転じて、「話を放っておく」という意味になります。
ex: I cannot just let the matter lie.
