Max: You’re late this morning, Diana.
Diana: Yeah. There was an accident on Route 26 this morning so the traffic was backed up for miles.
Max: An accident? Nothing too serious, I hope.
Diana: Well, at first, it looked like it was just road works, because road workers were directing the traffic and there was no sign of an ambulance or anything.
Max: Really?
Diana: Yeah. But there was a truck stopped in the middle of the road at an awkward angle? and when I passed it, I had a quick look back and saw a young woman lying on the road!
Max: You’re kidding! The truck hit her?
Diana: Apparently so.
Max: But there was no ambulance there so you must have passed it just after it happened.
Diana: Yeah. I hope she was OK. She sure didn’t look too good though.
Max: Not a good way to start the day, is it?
Diana: The worst!

"back up"には「流れを止める、滞らせる」という意味があります。
ex: Jim said that he couldn't make any calls, hotels were booked, trains weren't running, and traffic was backed up severely with cars running out of gas in the blackout.

"there was no sign of 〜"で「〜の兆候がない」。
"sign"には「兆候、気配」という意味があります。
ex: We walked and walked in the dark, but there was no sign of a village.
（僕らは暗闇の中を歩きに歩いたけど、村に入った様子はなかった。）

「そのようね」
"apparently"は、「（実際のところはわからないけれど）見たところは、外見上は〜に見える」というニュアンスで用いられます。
you must have passed it just after it happened.
「あなたが通りかかったのは、事故が起ったすぐあとだったのに違いないわね」
"must have + 過去分詞"で「〜だったにちがいない」。過去についての推定の表現です。否定表現は"cannot have + 過去分詞（〜だったはずがない）"になります。
ex: Kelly must have known the person, otherwise she would never have got into the car. She was very cautious.
（ケリーはその人物を知っていたに違いないわ。そうじゃなきゃ、車に乗り込んだりしないわよ。彼女はとても用心深かったから）
