Tim: Have you seen Janey’s new car yet?
Elizabeth: Yeah, she took me out for a spin in it the other day. It looks really good, but she’s had nothing but problems with it since the day she bought it.
Tim: Problems? What sort of problems?
Elizabeth: The engine has a tendency to cut out a lot, and she had an oil leak the other day.
Tim: It sounds like she got stuck with a real lemon there. How much did she pay for it?
Elizabeth: It wasn’t cheap! I think she said about ten grand.
Tim: I told her to take one of us guys with her when she went to buy it. She doesn’t know the first thing about cars. I bet she just bought it because it was shiny!
Elizabeth: Yep, and because it had leather seats!
Tim: Fool!

The engine has a tendency to cut out a lot
「エンジンが急に止まることがしょっちゅうなんだ」
"have a tendency to..."で「〜する傾向がある、〜しがちである」という意味のフレーズ。"The engine tends to..."としても同じ意味。
ex: Free things on the internet have a tendency to change into nonfree things.

It sounds like she got stuck with a real lemon there.
「欠陥品を買わされたみたいだね」
"get(be) stuck with"は、「〜から逃れられない、〜のヒドイ目にあう」。また、"lemon"は俗語で「欠陥車、欠陥品」。欠陥車の多いアメリカ社会でよく使われます。
ex: If your car or computer is a Lemon, you may be entitled to your money back.
（もし自分の車やコンピューターが欠陥品であったら、返金してもらえる権利があるかもしれない）
I think she said about ten grand.
「たしか1万ドルとか言ってた」
"grand"は俗語で「1000ドル（ポンド）」。"grand"はもともと「大きい、雄大な」という意味で、特に大きなホテルなどの建物の名前として"The Grand Hotel"という形で使われます。
She doesn't know the first thing about cars.
「彼女は車に関してはなんにも知らないんだよ」
"first thing about"は「〜のイロハ」。このダイアログのように、"not know the first thing about 〜"で「〜について基本的なことさえ知らない、何も知らない」という表現です。"not know anything about 〜"、"know nothing about 〜"と同じような意味になります。
ex: I don't know the first thing about French art.
