L: My god, Peter, come take a look at this.
P: What is it?
L: They say the death toll from that tsunami the other day has reached
150,000 people.
P: 150,000!?
L: I know. I can’t believe it.
P: The last I saw it was 60,000.
L: 60,000? Were you living in a cave for the last few days? The
numbers have been going up every day.
P: I was busy. I had to work.
L: Didn’t you talk about it at work?
P: Well, yeah. We’re organizing a relief fund to donate to charity,
but we didn’t really go into the details of how many people died.
L: It’s a huge catastrophe. They’re saying it’s one of the worst
natural disasters ever.
P: It’s got to be…I mean, 150,000 people, just like that.
L: 150,000 and counting.
P: It really puts things in perspective, doesn’t it?
L: Seriously. I hope nothing like this ever happens to me. I think
I’d be beside myself.

そのまま使える便利なフレーズを覚えましょう。
The numbers have been going up every day.
「死者は毎日増えているのよ。」
“go up" にもさまざまな表現がありますが、ここでは、単純に「上がる」という意味。値段・温度などにも使います。
ex. Oil prices have really gone up in the last month.
（この一ヶ月、石油の値段はかなり高くなった。）
we didn't really go into the details of how many people died.
「何人死んだとか、詳しいことまでは話してないよ。」
“go into the details" は、「細部にわたって、詳しく述べる、くどくど言う」の意味のイディオム。
このgo は、enterにも言い換えができます。
ex. The article went into detail about the accident.
（記事は、事故について詳しく書いてあった。）
I mean, 150,000 people, just like that
「150,000人が一瞬にして死んでしまったんだよな。」
“I mean" は、「つまり、いやその」など、言い誤り直したり、自分の話を明確にするため補足説明する時に使われる表現です。
“just like that" で、「簡単に、突然、何の予告もなしに」という意味のイディオム。また、前に話しした内容について、「まぁそんな感じ、ただそれだけなんだ」もよく使われる表現。
ex. Ayumi Hamasaki is amazing! I mean, she's talented, beautiful and has a great sense of style.
（浜崎あゆみは最高だよ！だって、才能もあるし、きれいだし、ファッションセンスも抜群だよ。）
ex. I can't believe she married him just like that.
（彼女は、彼と直ぐ結婚してしまって信じられない。）
I think I'd be beside myself.
「たぶん僕は自分を見失なうと思う。」
“would be"は will の過去形でですが、「〜かもしれない、〜でしょう」と可能性や推量を表しています。
また、would を使うことによって、will をよりも丁寧な言い方になる。
また、"beside oneself" は、「我を忘れて、逆上して」のイディオム。
ex. She was beside herself with grief after losing her husband.
（主人を亡くして、彼女は悲しみのあまり気が転倒していた。）
