Teri is talking to her workmate Simon, who has just bought a new house in the country.
T: I heard you just moved house, Simon.
S: Yeah, I bought a property out in the hills a few years ago and
we finally finished building the house last month.
T: That must be pretty exciting for you.
S: Yeah, it is. It’s an eco-home, you know. We installed solar
panels on our roof and a wind generator to produce all our own
power.
T: So you’re not hooked up to the national power grid?
S: No, we’re not. We did look at it, but the connection costs
were astronomical. It’s actually a lot cheaper for us to make
our own, and besides, there are only two of us living there, so
we don’t use that much power anyway.
T: Cool! So being out in the hills, you must have a pretty big
section, then?
S: Pretty big. We’ve planted a little orchard of apples, pears
and apricots as well as an organic vegetable garden, and we’re
going keep chickens and sheep. Nicky’s trying to talk me into
getting cows as well. She’s dying to make her own butter and
cheese.
T: Sounds like a little piece of heaven. I’d love to see it sometime.
S: Sure! You’re welcome anytime!

「それじゃあ、国の電力網に接続していないの？」
“hook up to 〜" は、「〜につなぐ、接続する」という意味のイディオム。「インターネットに接続」も“hook up to the Internet." になる。その他、「ホックで留める、仲間になる」という意味もある。
Ex. I'm getting cable TV hooked up this weekend.
（今週末、ケーブルテレビにつなぐことにした。）

「一度調べてみたんだけど、接続費用がものすごく高いんだよ。」
“astronomical" は「天文学の」という意味が、ここでは、「天文学的に大きい」という表現として使われていて、「きわめて高い・高額な」という意味になる。同じく、数字・量・程度がけた外れに大きいことを表わすときにも使う。
Ex. I love my new apartment, but the rent is astronomical.
（新しいアパートが大好きだけど、家賃はすごく高い。）
Nicky's trying to talk me into getting cows as well.
「ニッキーが牛も飼うように僕を説得中だよ。」
“talk into 〜ing" で、「〜するように説得する」というイディオム。
反対の表現は、“talk out of 〜ing"「〜しないように説得する」になる。
Ex. I talked my friend into going to London with me for the weekend.
（私は、週末一緒にロンドンに行くように友達を説得した。）
She's dying to make her own butter and cheese.
「彼女、自家製のバターとかチーズを作りたくてしょうがないみたいなんだ。」
“be dying to (またはfor)〜" は、「〜したくてたまらない、〜が欲しくてたまらない」という意味になる。
Ex. I'm dying to see the new Johnny Depp movie.
（私は、ジョニー・デップの新しい映画を見たくてしょうがない。）
