J: Rog, that was just Callie on the phone. She’s invited us to her
place next Saturday night for a dinner party.
R: Oh God, I hope you didn’t accept.
J: Of course I did. What? You don’t want to go?
R: I’d rather have my fingernails torn out than have to sit through
another one of her soirees. The last time we went I got stuck
talking to that damn conservative MP all night, remember?
J: Oh, come on honey! It wasn’t that bad. And you know Callie.
She won’t take no for an answer.
R: Well, you’re just going to have to work you charm on her then,
because there’s no way in hell that I’m going to spend the
evening hobnobbing with all those stuck-up old geezers again.
J: All right honey. I’ll call her back and see if I can get us out
of it.

I'd rather have my fingernails torn out than have to sit through another one of her soirees.
「彼女のおきまりのパーティーで座らされるなら、指の爪をむしられた方
がましだよ。」
“would rather A than B" は、「ＢするよりＡした方がまし、Ｂするより
もむしろＡする方がよい」という比較のイディオムになる。
Ex. I'd rather be impaled on spikes than have to give a speech
to those old fogies.
（あの頭の固い人たちにスピーチするなら、釘に刺されたほうがまだましだ。）
She won't take no for an answer.
「絶対嫌とは言わせない人だって。」
“won't take no for an answer" で「嫌とは言わせない、あきらめが
悪い」という意味になる。Won't の代わりにneverを付けると、「あきら
めない」、notは「ノーという返事を受け入れない」、refuse toは「否と
は言わせない」という意味になる。
Ex. I tried to get out of going to the conference but my boss
wouldn't take no for an answer.
（会議に行きたくなかったんだけど、上司が嫌と言わせなかった。）
I'll call her back and see if I can get us out of it.
「今から断る事ができるかどうか、彼女にかけ直してみる。」
“see if〜" は「〜かどうかを確かめる、〜かどうかを見る」という意味
です。また“get out of 〜" には「〜から出る、〜から降りる、〜から
逃げ出す、〜から自由になる」などいろいろな意味があるが、基本的に
「〜から抜け出す」というニュアンスを含む表現になる。
Ex. I'll call and see if she's free now.
（今電話して、彼女が空いているかどうか確かめる。）
