P: Phil
A: Amy
P: I can’t believe how pricey kerosene has gotten. It’s almost
double what it was last year.
A: I know. I went to get a few tanks filled up the other day and
they were charging over 1,200 per container. And the worst part
is I went there because it’s supposed to be one of the cheaper
places in town.
P: That’s actually not that bad. Try living downtown. Most of the gas
stations hike up the price quite a bit because of the location. I
think the last time I went I paid almost 1,500 a tank.
A: It’s ridiculous, isn’t it?
P: Tell me about it. I’ve already spent more on heating oil in the
last two months than I did all of last winter. And it’s only
January.
A: Well, let’s hope it’s a short winter.

そのまま使える便利なフレーズを覚えましょう。
I can't believe how pricey kerosene has gotten.
「こんなに灯油が高くなったなんて信じられないよ。」
“pricey"は「高価な、値段の高い」という意味で、“expensive"と
同じ意味。買い物をするとき、“It's a little pricy."「ちょっと
高いね」とよく使うので、覚えておくと便利。
ex: This photo frame is very nice, but it's a little pricy.
「この写真たて、すごく良いけど、ちょっと高いわ。」
Most of the gas stations hike up the price quite a bit because of the location.
「ほとんどのスタンドが、その場所のために、かなり値段を吊り上げてるよ。」
“hike up 〜"「〜を吊り上げる、ぐいっと引き上げる」という意味。
お金に対して使う場合は、代わりに“increase"、“raise"を使う
ことが出来る。また、“〜 hike"で、「〜値上げ」の意味になる。
例えば、“salary hike"「給料値上げ」,“fare hike"「運賃値上げ」など。
ex: Due to the heavy snow, supermarkets have hiked up the prices
of green vegetables.
「大雪のため、スーパーは青野菜の値段を吊り上げた。」
Tell me about it.
「本当だよ。」
“Tell me about it"は、「本当だよ、そうだね、その通りだ」という
意味。相手の言うことに、同意するときに使う表現。日常会話でよく
使うので、覚えておくと便利でしょう。
ex: “It's been so cold this year." “Tell me about it."
「今年は本当に寒いよね。」「本当に。」

A: そうね。この間、タンクを何個か一杯にしに行ったら、タンク一つ

P: それは、そんなに悪くないさ。ダウンタウンに住んでみなよ。ほとんど
のスタンドが、その場所のために、かなり値段を吊り上げてるよ。この
前行ったときは、タンク一つ1,500円払ったと思うな。
A: 馬鹿げてるわね?
P: 本当だよ。この二ヶ月でもう、去年の冬に灯油に使った金額より
使ったよ。それなのに、まだ一月だよ。
A: そうね、短い冬であることを祈りましょう。
