L: Honey, I’m home!
R: How was your dance class?
L: It was so much fun! I never imagined ballroom dancing could be
so enjoyable! I’m so glad Marianne talked me into going with
her.
R: That’s good to hear. I’m glad you’ve found something to keep
you busy now that Malcolm’s finally left home.
L: Me too. You know honey, Marianne’s husband Ed is learning with
her. She says it’s brought them so much closer together.
R: Good for them.
L: Well Roy, that got me thinking. We’re short of men in class,
and you and I are always talking about doing more things
together now all the kids have left home, so I was wondering
if you’d be interested in coming to a class.
R: What? Me? Prance around in a tuxedo? You’ve got to be joking!
L: Come on love, if Ed can do it, I’m sure you can.
R: Not on your life! I’d never hear the end of it if the boys at
work heard I was learning ballroom dancing!

"talk someone into 〜"は「（人を）〜をするように説得する」という
意味。 "talk around", "persuade", "win over"などの言い方も
ある。ほかに "talk" を使う表現で"talk a blue streak"「早口
で話す」、"talk away"「話し続ける」、"talk back"「口答えを
する」、"talk behind someone's back"「陰口をいう」、"talk
big"「自慢する」もある。
Ex. I talked my mother into staying one more night.
（私は、母をもう一泊するように説得した。）
She says it's brought them so much closer together.
（ダンスが二人の絆を強めたって、彼女言ってるわ。）
"bring them closer together" は「（二人以上の人の）絆を強める、
距離を縮める」という意味の表現。"strengthen the bond between"
という言い方もある。
Ex. Marriage has brought us closer together.
（結婚することによって、私たちの絆が強まった。）
Not on your life!
（とんでもない！）
"not on your life!"は「絶対に嫌だ、とんでもない」という意味。
「あなたの命をもらっても絶対に嫌だ」というのが語源。ほかに"No
way!","Get off!","You've got to be kidding!" など、いろ
いろな言い方がある。
Ex. "We need someone to make a speech tomorrow. Will you do
it?"
"Not on your life!"
（明日挨拶をする人がいないとだめだけど、やってくれる？）
（絶対嫌だ！）
I'd never hear the end of it if the boys at work heard I was learning ballroom dancing!
（仕事仲間が、僕が社交ダンスを習ってるって聞いたら、一生からかわれるよ！）
"never hear the end of it" は「嫌と言うほど聞かされる」という
意味。過去形の "I would 〜 if" と一緒に使うときは、恥ずかし
いことを断る場合に使う。「もし（恥ずかしいことを）やって、それ
がばれたら、一緒かわれる」という意味になる。現在形の "I will
(I'll)" と一緒に使う場合は、恥ずかしいことをしたあと、それが
ばれた時に使う。「一緒からかわれるな〜」という意味になる。
Ex. Did they really see me sing? Oh no, I'll never hear the
end of it!
（彼らは本当に私が歌っていたところをみちゃったの？しまった〜。
一緒からかわれるよ！）
