P: Nice day to be outside isn’t it?
B: Sure is. Where’s your boy today?
P: Chris? Carol took him to his junior soccer game. He’s playing out
at Nelson Park.
B: That boy gets bigger and bigger every time I see him.
P: I know, it’s terrible!
B: How so?
P: He’s getting to that age where he wants to know why this and why
that… the other day, he asked me why some birds fly and others
don’t.
B: Ha! That’s a good question! And how did you answer?
P: I said “ask your mother”! He’s keeping me on my toes, that’s for
sure.
B: I saw him taking an interest under your car the other day. He
looked like a little mechanic.
P: Yeah, and he managed to get grease all over himself.
B: Well, as they say, like father, like son!

"be getting to that age where 〜"は「〜の年頃になってきた」と
いう意味。単なる"be getting to that age"は「年頃になってきた」
という意味。"get to"には「達する、到着する、連絡をつける、取り
掛かる、影響を与える、連れて行く」などの意味がある。
Ex: Mary is getting to that age.
（マリーは異性を意識する年頃になってきた。）
He's keeping me on my toes, that's for sure.
（私を油断させないんですよ、それは確かです。）
"keep someone on one's toes"は「（人を）油断させずにおく、用心
させておく、気を張り詰めさせておく」という意味。"on one's toes"
は「（精神・肉体的に）緊張して、（活動の準備を）整えた」という
意味。その他"toe"を使ったイディオムには、"dig one's toes in"
「頑固である」、"make one's toes curl"「（人を）当惑させる、
不愉快な思いをさせる」、"toe the line"「規則に従う、習慣に
従う」、"on the toes of〜"「〜の感情を損ねる、〜のつま先を
踏む」などがある。

（この前、息子さんが、あなたの車の下で興味を持っているのを見ましたよ。）
"take an interest"は「興味を持つ、関心を持つ」という意味。
"interest"は「興味、関心、興味の対象、趣味」という意味がある。また、
「利益、利息、利子、利害関係」という意味もある。「〜に興味を持った」
は、"be interested in 〜"と言える。
Ex: He took an interest in cooking, so decided to go to cooking
school.
（彼は、料理に興味があったので、料理学校に行くことに決めた。）
like father, like son!
（この父にしてこの子あり！とういうことです。）
"like father, like son."は「この父にしてこの子あり、蛙の子は蛙、
似た者親子」ということわざ。母と娘の場合なら"like mother, like
daughter."と言うこともできる。
Ex: My son got into a fight again. Like father, like son.
（私の息子がまた喧嘩をしてきたんです。蛙の子は蛙ですね。）
