M: Guess who that was on the phone just now.
R: Not Tara again!
M: Yep. That’s the second time this week she’s called in sick.
I can’t believe the nerve of that girl!
R: Well, she looked fine when I spotted her downtown last night.
What’s the bet she’s nursing another hangover?
M: I wouldn’t be surprised. I really wish Jeremy would do
something about this. I mean, when she’s not taking sick days
she’s late, and when she does eventually get around to doing
some work she makes a complete mess of everything.
R: I’d like to see her fired as much as you Millie, but the chances
of Jeremy giving her the sack are pretty slim, especially with
Tara’s father being a major shareholder in the company.
M: Well, we’ve got to do something! Maybe we could try and
convince Jeremy to transfer her to a job where she’d be less of
a liability.
R: Hmmm, I doubt we’ll get far but we can sure give it a try.

"call in sick"は「病欠の電話をする、病気で休むと電話する」と
いう意味。「病欠」は、"absence due to sickness", "sick leave",
などという。"call in 〜"には、「〜を呼ぶ、（助け・
援助などを）求める、訪問する、立ち寄る、寄航する、迎え入れる、
呼び込む、支払いを要求する、（金を）取り立てる、通報する、電話を
入れる」という意味がある。
Ex: There is a leak in the ceiling. We should call in the repair
man.

"What's the bet 〜?"は「絶対〜だよね？」という意味。"bet"は
「きっと・・だ、・・だと確信する、うけあう、確かだと当てにする」
という意味がある。その他、「（金などを）賭ける、（人と）賭けを
する」などの意味もあるので、この「〜だと確信する」という意味は、
「お金をかけるほど自信がある」ということからきた表現。"bet"を
使ったフレーズには、"You bet!"「確かに！、もちろん！」、
"Want a bet?/Wanna bet?"「（相手の主張を否認して）それは本当か
ねえ、そんなことがあるのか」などがある。
Ex: What's the bet she had cosmetic surgery?

"get far"はこの場合「（人が）成功する」という意味。他には
「遠くまで行く」という意味がある。その他、"go a long way",
"get anywhere", "make it", "crack it"などの言い方
がある。
Ex: He did his best but he didn't get far with his proposal.
（彼は、最善を尽くしたが、提案が取り上げられなかった。）
