Claire: Oh no, I’m late again. (Picks up her phone and makes a call to a man she’ll be meeting. Speaks to the voice mail.) Hello, this is Claire Anderson-Mcguire of Simply Beautiful. I’m terribly sorry, Steve, but I think I’ll be late. I apologize for keeping you waiting, but I should be at the cafe before 2:15. Thank you very much for your patience.
Steve: (Several minutes later) Oh, hi Claire! Nice to meet you!
Claire: I’m so sorry…I had a call when I was just about to leave the office, and I knew I had to go, but the person on the other end of the line insisted it was something that had to be dealt with immediately…by the way, did you get my message?
Steve: Oh, you left a message on my phone? I’m sorry I missed it…actually, I left my phone in the office. I guess that means we are even.
Claire: So how’s everything going?
Steve: Oh, fine, just fine…except that there has been some personnel reshuffle, and I have to teach new-comers everything from scratch.
Claire: Sounds like a lot of bother.
Steve: I think you know the way we work much better than they do.

約束の時間に間に合わなさそうな時、とりあえずこれぐらい相手に伝えておけばいいかもしれませんね。まず、I'm terribly sorryとあやまって送れる旨伝え、待たせることを詫び、何時には着くかを告げ、最後には「待っていただいてありがとうございます」にあたるThank you very much for your patienceをつけます。

この表現は、何かゲームなどをしていて「これであいこ（イーブン）だね」と言いたい場合と、今回のように互いに失態をしでかした場合とに使えます。

from scratchは「ゼロから、一から」という意味。scratchには「引っかき傷」の他に「スタートライン」という意味があるんです。

直訳は「（それは）面倒が多そうですね」。こういうフレーズをストックしておくと会話もよりスムーズに運びますよ。
