Lesson 597 中級

Family trouble

Claire has just walked into the office. Ken, her colleague, is at his desk.

Dialog

Claire has just walked into the office. Ken, her colleague, is at his desk.

Claire: So Ken…do I look any different to you?

Ken: Um…well…ah…yes, you’ve had your hair cut?

Claire: Well done, Ken. So even you’ve noticed it.

Ken: Claire? What are you on about?

Claire: Well, I had my hair cut yesterday, but when I got home, my husband didn’t say a word about it, though he did know I went to the hairdresser’s. At first, I gave him a chance, thinking perhaps he was occupied with something more important. But in the end, I realized he just wasn’t being observant. Husbands do disappoint their wives, that’s for sure.

Ken: To tell you the truth, Claire, I might not have noticed it myself if you hadn’t asked me in the first place. It’s a very subtle change that you’ve done to your hair, you know.

Claire: I’d let you off if you couldn’t figure out what was different about my hair…but he’s different! He’s my husband! He’s got a responsibility to notice things like that!

Ken: (Sighs) Why don’t you try skinhead next time? Then he’d have no excuse…

Claire: Ha, ha. That’s very funny.

Explanations

At first, I gave him a chance.

Husbands do disappoint their wives, that's for sure.

I might not have noticed it myself if you hadn't asked me in the first place.

in the first placeは「最初の時点で、そもそも」。
Ex) When it's so cold like this, I don't feel like going out to begin with.

I'd let you off.

(The police let the suspect off.) I'll let you off.

Ex) Sorry, I forgot to mail your letter.---I'll let you off this time.

That's very funny.
