Michelle is talking to her good friend Sarah. She raises some concerns about Jack and upcoming meeting with Mr. Mackey.

Sarah: This tea’s excellent, Shelley. Where’d you buy it?

Michelle: I got it from that new gourmet shop down on Davis Ave. It’s nice, isn’t it?

Sarah: Yeah. I think I’ll have to make a trip there soon. You know, speaking of that, just the other day I-

Michelle: Sorry to change the subject, but something’s been bothering me lately…

Sarah: What? What is it, honey?

Michelle: Have you and Frank ever had to talk to Frankie Jr.’s guidance counselor?

Sarah: Sure. Not often, but yeah we’ve gone to see her.

Michelle: Well. Jack and I have to go see Carl’s guidance counselor. Carl’s been having some trouble in school lately.

Sarah: Oh, Shelley, I’m sorry. Is everything alright?

Michelle: Oh, it’s not that bad. Carl’s just having some trouble in a few classes, and the counselor wants to address the issue before it becomes a bigger problem.

Sarah: That’s understandable. Frank and I found Frankie Jr.’s guidance counselor really helpful. She’s great.

Michelle: I’m just worried about how Jack is going to react… You know, what with his dyslexia and all, Jack struggled a lot in high school; and so he’s very sensitive about these kinds of things. A lot of his teachers made him feel stupid and so he has a real distrust for all things school related.

Sarah: Poor Jack. Well, maybe he’ll change his mind if he can see that the counselor is not just criticizing, but genuinely trying to help.

Michelle: I hope so.

Here we find out a little more about why Jack is so threatened by this upcoming meeting with the guidance counselor. Jack's condition, Dyslexia, is a fairly common neurological disorder. It is caused by a minor malfunction in the brain which impairs the sufferer's ability to read; thus, consequently, it causes impaired learning. Only recently, however, have people become aware of this condition. In the old days, children with dyslexia were often treated as mentally inferior and so had a very hard time at school. Michelle confides in her good friend Sarah that she is worried that Jack's bad experiences at school are going to affect his judgment in this situation. To say someone is "very sensitive about these things" implies that that person had a bad experience along similar lines in the past, which triggers feelings of distress and usually anger should the same situation arise again. It's often a polite way of saying that someone tends to over-react.

Sarah: わかるわ。うちの場合は、フランキーJrのガイダンスカウンセラーが本当に力になってくれたわ。すばらしい人でね。

Michelle: ジャックがどうするつもりなのかが、ちょっと心配なの…だって、失読症とかいろいろあって、ジャックは高校で苦労したでしょ。だから、彼、こういう類のことにはとても神経質なのよ。たくさんの先生に頭が悪いみたいに扱われて、だから、学校に関係あることには何でも本当に不信感を抱いているのよ。

Sarah: 可哀想なジャック。まあ、そのカウンセラーの人があら探しばかりしているわけじゃなくて、心から力になろうとしているんだって納得すれば、気が変わるかもしれないわ。

Michelle: そうね。
