What’s the Deal?

A few days before the meeting with Mr. Mackey, one of Jack's friends, a co-worker named Dave, notices that Jack is not his usual self and decides to ask him about it.

Dave: Hey, Jackie, what’s shaking?

Jack: Nothing much.

Dave: You’ve been kinda distracted lately. What’s the deal? You and the wife having some trouble.

Jack: Nah, it’s nothing like that. I’ve got this meeting with my kid’s guidance counselor this week to talk about his “academic future” or something like that.

Dave: Oh.

Jack: Yeah. His grades are dropping a little and he apparently seems distracted in class.

Dave: Well, what they are suggesting might be done about it?

Jack: I don’t know yet. But these schools never seem to take into account that kids are kids, and sometimes just aren’t interested in this or that. Everything’s all business. I just wish they would deal with kids on a more personal level. You know, help them develop their interests or something.

Dave: I guess they figure that’s the parents’ job…I don’t know. I agree with you, buddy. My kids find their schoolwork really difficult and the teachers aren’t giving them the attention they need. What’s worse is that schools are turning into trade schools. “Preparing kids for today’s working world.”

Jack: Well that’s not going to happen to Carl. I’m not having him railroaded into some dumb job, just ‘cause some teachers can’t do their jobs properly.

Jack: そうなんだ。成績が少し落ちていてね、授業中もどうやらボ〜としているらしい。

Dave: ふ〜ん、それでどうしたらいいって言ってるの？

Jack: まだわからないんだ。でも、学校ってところは、子供が子供で、あれやこれやに興味がもてない時だってあるってことを考慮してくれないらしい。何もかもすべて事務的でさ。せめて子供たちをもっと個人として扱ってほしいもんだよ。なあ、子供たちの興味とかそういうもの伸ばす手助けとかさ。

Dave: たぶん、学校側は、それは親の仕事だと思っているんだろ…知らないけど。同感だよ、相棒。オレんとこの子供たちも学校の勉強が本当に難しくなってきてるけど、教師たちは必要な配慮をしてくれてないね。もっと悪いことは、学校が職業訓練所化しつつあるってことさ。「子供たちが今日の社会に対応できるように」ってね。

Jack: まあ、カールの問題はそういうことじゃないんだ。息子をつまらない仕事に追いやったりはさせないさ。自分の仕事をちゃんとできない先生がいるからってだけで。
