Karen: I just can’t believe this. The city looked so peaceful before they started attacking. There’s no mistaking the sound of an air-raid siren, is there? It’s so distinct and eerie. Come to think of it, they must be cutting it close to the deadline. I mean it’s been maybe just 48-hours.
Bill: Well I had hoped that the attack wouldn’t come this quickly or better yet not at all. I find it hard to believe that it has actually started.
Karen: I know. For a while there it seemed as if the situation might be improving: the Iraqis were co-operating with the weapons inspectors, and the world-wide protests seemed to be influencing international opinion. But I guess that’s all out the window now.
Bill: You know just the other day I was talking to Jeff at work, and he actually supports this war. He was saying that he thinks that America is justified in taking out Hussein, that it’s a tough decision but a necessary one.
Karen: I don’t think anyone would disagree that Hussein is a bad man, and probably shouldn’t be ruling Iraq. But the point is that you can’t just attack anyone you like. There are rules and protocols for this kind of thing. I don’t understand people like that. I don’t know how they can go along with this.
Bill: I guess people still have faith in the government. The last I saw 47% of people were in favor of this ridiculous war.
Karen: Well I don’t think popular opinion really matters anymore. It’s clear to me that Bush made up his mind about this long ago. The whole situation just makes me sick.
Bill: Me too.

Bill: この間、仕事でジェフと話しただろ、アイツは実際、この戦争を支持しているんだ。アメリカがフセインを排除するのは正当なことで、困難な決断だけど、必要だと思っていると言ってたよ。
Karen: 誰もフセインが悪者だってことに反対はしないと思うし、おそらくイラクを統治すべきではないんでしょう。でも、大切なのは、好きじゃない人を攻撃するだけじゃだめ、ってことよ。こういうことにはルールと作法があるのよ。そんな人たちのことは理解できないわ。どうしてこんなことに同調できるのか、わからない。
Bill: たぶん、まだ、みんな政府を信頼しているんだよ。僕が最後に見たところによれば、47%の人がこのとんでもない戦争に賛成してた。
Karen: まあ、世論が本当に重要だとは、もはや思っていないけど。私にとってはっきりしているのは、ブッシュはこのことを昔から心に決めていたんだってことよ。この状況は何もかもまったく嫌なことばかりだわ。
Bill: 僕もさ。
