Bill: Did you see the news this evening? Did you see President Bush’s speech?

Karen: No. I’ve heard a few things here and there. I guess the situation’s not getting any better.

Bill: You can say that again. Bush has given Saddam Hussein and his sons just 48 hours to leave Iraq and go into exile, or else an invasion will begin. I can’t believe this. What the hell does Bush think he’s doing? Most of the country is against this war; and people around the world are demonstrating against it and against America. I don’t know what Bush is thinking.

Karen: I know. I mean it just shows some of the hypocrisy that exists within our country. I thought this was supposed to be a country where the people’s opinion and voice counted for something, but now our government is starting to look more and more like a dictatorship.

Bill: I don’t know if it’s that bad yet, but I agree the fact that Bush has openly stated he won’t listen to the opinion of the international community is disappointing. The thing I don’t understand is if Bush and the government have such concrete evidence about these weapons of mass destruction, why don’t they just produce it and convince everyone.

Karen: It’s because there is no evidence. It’s hard to say exactly what Bush’s motivation is for pursuing this conflict so vehemently, but whatever the reason I don’t believe it’s a just one.

Bill: What a mess this is turning out to be. I just pray that a miracle might happen in the next few days.

Karen: Me too. But for now all we can do is wait.

This is the first dialogue in a short series about the conflict between Iraq and America. In this scene we have a husband and wife, Bill and Karen, who are talking about President Bush's 48-hour ultimatum speech. Both of them are against the war and feel that their government is failing to protect the interests of its citizens and of the international community. The title phrase of this dialogue "what a mess" can be used when the speaker is referring to a difficult situation; especially one where there seems to be no clear solution. It expresses a feeling of disappointment more so than a feeling of being in trouble.
今回は、イラクとアメリカの戦争に関する短いシリーズの第一話です。このシーンでは、1組の夫婦、ビルとカレンがブッシュ大統領の48時間の最後通告について離しています。二人とも戦争には反対で、政府が市民の、さらに国際社会の利益を守ろうとしていないと感じています。今回のダイアログのタイトル"what a mess"は、話し手が困難な状況、とくにはっきりとした解決策がみえないような状況について言及しているときに使うことができるフレーズで、困っているという気持ちよりも、ガッカリしている気持ちを表します。

Bill: 夕方のニュース見た？ブッシュ大統領の演説を見たかい？

Karen: いいえ。あちこちで少しウワサを聞いただけ。状況は全然よくなってないんでしょうね。

Bill: そのとおりだよ。ブッシュは、サダム・フセインと彼の息子たちにたった48時間の猶予しか与えなかったんだ。彼らがイラクを出て亡命しなければ、侵攻が始まるよ。こんなことって信じられない。いったいブッシュはどういうツモリなんだ？大多数の国民がこの戦争に反対だし、世界中の人々が反戦・反米デモをしているのに。わかんないよ、ブッシュは何を考えているんだい？

Karen: そうね。私たちの国に内在する偽善の一部が現れているだけだと思うわ。この国では国民の意見や声が重要視されるはずだと思っていたんだけど、いまやだんだん独裁政権みたいになってきたわね。

Bill: 僕にはまだ、そこまでひどいことなのかどうかわからないけど、ブッシュが国際社会の意見に耳を傾けるツモリはないと公言しているのは、残念なことだと思うよ。僕が理解できないのは、ブッシュと政府が大量破壊兵器に関して具体的な証拠を握っているのなら、何故それを提出して皆を説得しないのかってことさ。

Karen: 証拠なんてないからよ。こんなに強硬にこの戦争をやりたがるブッシュの動機が何なのか、正確には言えないけど、理由が何であれ、たった一つだとは信じないわよ。

Bill: こんなことになるなんて、なんて事だ。数日のうちに奇跡が起きることを祈るだけだ。

Karen: 私もよ。でも今のところ、私たちにできることは待つことだけだわ。
