It's now a few days into the cruise and Sam hasn't been able to change rooms. Although, I'm sure he wishes he could change rooms after this encounter with Joan.

Sam: What a beautiful day. In spite of everything, this trip has been so relaxing the past few days. Thank god this boat is so big.

Joan: Yeah, almost as big as your ass. Get out of the way, you’re blocking my sun.

Sam: Aw, Jeeze! What do you think you’re doing? We’re bound to run into each other if you stay here. Why don’t you go to the pool to suntan?

Joan: Because the pool’s crowded. And besides, weren’t you the one who was going to get a new room?

Sam: All the first class cabins were taken. They only had third class available.

Joan: You should be used to that.

Sam: Why do you gotta be so mean?

Joan: Oh, I don’t know. Call it overdue payback for when I caught you screwing around with your secretary.

Sam: That’s unfair. You were so wrapped up in your work. You never came home. We never spent time together.

Joan: Oh, like you didn’t get caught up in your work. Let’s not forget who missed our anniversary 2 years in a row.

Sam: That was…I can’t do this. I’m going to the pool. I don’t expect to see you again.

Joan: Fine. Oh Sam, be a dear, stay away from tonight’s social mixer. I don’t want you ruining my chances with any of the single studs.

From the previous dialogue, we know that Sam was going to try and get his room changed so that he and Joan could be separated. He was not able to do this. From their conversation, we can clearly see that Joan and Sam do not get along. However from their brief argument we do learn that while they were married Sam had an affair, and Joan was very distant and wrapped up in her work. Because they haven't talked in five years there is a lot of pent up hostility between them. A "social mixer" is another word for a party, especially one where you have many people who don't really know each other - as on a cruise ship.
