Scene 6-11 上級 The Trouble with Max

After his fateful conversation with Tina, God again visits Max to help him pick up the pieces.

God: Sorry about what happened with Tina, Max.

Max: Oh it’s you. What do you want?

God: I just wanted to make sure you were all right.

Max: I’m fine.

God: Now, Max, do you really think that’s going to work on me? I know if you’re fine or not, and you’re not fine. In fact, you’re quite upset.

Max: You’re damn right I’m upset. I followed your advice. I thought about all the shitty things I’ve done. I tried to mend my ways, and what happens? I get the shaft.

God: It doesn’t feel very good, does it, Max?

Max: What does she mean she doesn’t want to settle for the first thing that comes along. It’s not like I was asking her to marry me. I just wanted to go with her to the Caribbean.

God: And Brenda just wanted to have a nice romantic dinner with you.

Max: So what is this some kind of karma thing? I was a jerk to Brenda, so now I get a taste of my own medicine?

God: Well, you can’t really think of it in that archaic “eye for an eye” way. It’s a lot more subtle than that. Still you’re on the right track.

Max: Was I really that bad?

God: I don’t think you need me to answer that question, do you, Max? You know it’s really nice tonight. Why don’t we go for a walk?

Max: I don’t want to walk and pretend to talk on my cell phone.

God: Don’t worry, Max. It’s late, and no one’s really around.

Having gone through the experience of the previous dialogue, Max is now hurt and confused. He feels angry because he thought that he was in the clear, but obviously there was one trial left for him to complete. Here God reminds Max that he was once like Tina, and that the hurt he feels now is the same as all the women felt in the wake of Max's rejection. This final confrontation was the last phase in the process of changing Max's point of view on things. His journey has at last come to an end. The "eye for an eye" concept referred to here is from the Bible. It is the textbook example of equal justice at any cost. It is a much debated concept, and one that has dangerous ramifications if taken too literally. In terms of the history of the Christian church, and even in modern Western society, this phrase has come up time and again too often with regrettable consequences.
