Scene 7-11 上級 The Story of Miles & Sadie

Heartfelt Apology

Miles comes by Sadie's apartment the following day. He feels bad about what happened and wants to apologise to her.

Sadie: Who is it?

Miles: Sadie, it’s Miles, listen, please don’t be angry with me. I just want you to hear me out. You don’t have to open the door if you don’t want to…I…I didn’t mean any disrespect yesterday by what I said. It was just the first time I had heard about your job…I was just surprised is all. I really didn’t mean to offend you and I’ve felt bad about the whole thing since you left yesterday. I brought you these (holds up a bunch of flowers to the peephole) to make up for it.

Sadie: (opening the door) I’m not sure I deserve those. Miles…I’m the one who should be apologizing to you. I had no right to speak to you that way. I guess I’m just sensitive about what people think of me…I’ve had some bad experiences in the past…

Miles: Well, I feel a bit relieved to hear you say that. I just felt so bad…I didn’t think I could’ve communicated all those things with just one word, but you never know how what you say comes across to others. When I thought about it, I realized it must have seemed really flippant of me to give that kind of reaction…

Sadie: No. It wasn’t anything like that…I was the one…I read into it what I assumed you would mean…it’s a bad habit of mine…anyway I’m sorry.

Miles: Ok. Well, either way I bought these to cheer you up. Go ahead take them.

Sadie: They’re really nice, Miles thanks. Would you like to come in?

Miles: I don’t want to impose…

Sadie: No it’s okay, really. Please, come in. (they go into the apartment). Just have a seat in there. I’ll go put these in some water. I have this really nice vase I can put them in.

Miles: Oh, this is a nice place.

Sadie: (from the kitchen) Well, I try.

Miles: Oooh, what do we have hear…you a jazz fan there, Sadie?

Sadie: A little, I guess. What about you?

Miles: I grew up on the stuff. I love it…I used to play a little you know.

Sadie: (coming back to the living room) You played?

Miles: Well, not professionally or anything. It was more like a neighbourhood band.

Sadie: Still that’s…that’s interesting. I had no idea.

Miles: Well, that was a long time ago and…(Miles wobbles a little and looks like he’s about to faint)

Sadie: Miles! Are you okay?

Miles: Yeah. I just felt a little woozy there. I’m fine…I’m…(loses consciousness and falls to the floor)

Sadie: Miles! Miles!…Oh my god…Miles!

After the incident from the previous day, Miles comes by Sadie's apartment to give her some flowers and make up for what happened. Having cooled off a bit after her talk with Tanya, Sadie feels really bad about the whole thing and admits to Miles that she is a bit sensitive about what people think of her. We also learn from this dialogue that Miles used to play in a jazz band a long time ago. This will be important later on, but for now it is just a side detail. The dramatic finish to this dialogue involves Miles falling to the floor unconscious and Sadie not knowing what to do. One interesting expression in this dialogue is “to grow up on something.” Usually this expression is reserved for food, and talking about what kind of food you often ate as a child. However, it can also be used to talk about things that were a major part of your upbringing and education -- such as music, art, books, television shows, movies, sports, etc.

Miles: そうか、その言葉を聞いてちょっとほっとしたよ。とても悪いことしたって思ったんだ … たったの一言ですべてを伝えられるとは思ってなかったけど、発言が他の人にどうとられるかはわからないものだからね。そう考えたとき、あんな反応をするなんて、本当にぶしつけに見えたにちがいないって気づいたんだ …

Sadie:いいえ、全然そんなことはなかったわ … 私のほうこそ … そういう意味だって思い込んでしまって … 私の悪い癖なのよ … とにかく、ごめんなさい。

Miles: よし。じゃあ、いずれにしても、これは君を元気付けようと思ってもってきたんだ。受け取ってよ。

Sadie:本当にステキね、マイルズ、ありがとう。お入りになる？

Miles: 面倒はかけたくないんだ …

Sadie:いいえ、大丈夫よ、本当に。お願い、入って。（二人はアパートメントに入る）そこに座って。私、これを水に活けてくるわ。とてもステキな花瓶があるの。

Miles: へえ、いい部屋だね。

Sadie:（台所から）まあ、いろいろ試しているの。

Miles: へえ、聞こえてくるのは … 君はジャズのファンなの、セイディ？

Sadie:少しは、そうかな。あなたはどう？

Miles: 私はジャズで大きくなったんだ。大好きだよ … 少し演奏していたんだよ。

Sadie:（リビングルームに戻って来て）演奏していたですって？

Miles: まあ、プロとかじゃなかったけどね。どっちかといえば、ご近所バンドって感じだったな。

Sadie:それでも … 興味深いわ。思いもしなかった。

Miles: まあ、昔のことだし … （マイルズは少し震えて、気絶しそうな様子）

Sadie:マイルズ！大丈夫？

Miles: ああ。少しクラクラしただけだよ。大丈夫 … 私は … （意識を失い、床に倒れこむ）

Sadie:マイルズ！マイルズ！ … 大変だわ … マイルズ！
