Sean: Hey, Jimbo. I heard you were having a bit of a dry spell, so I thought I might bring by some news that would cheer you up.

Jim: Oh, yeah. What is it?

Sean: Have you ever heard of Helix Inc.?

Jim: Sure, it’s that company that makes office supplies. They service a lot of the firms around here.

Sean: That’s them. Well, word on the street is that Helix Inc. is about to go belly up, and it looks like they made a deal with Office Wizard to be taken over. That means that Office Wizard will be the biggest office supply company in the country. As soon as the take-over happens, their stocks are going to soar. It’s going to be a good buy. Do you want in?

Jim: What!? But, but, Sean, isn’t that kind of dangerous, not to mention illegal?

Sean: Alright look, Jim, I gotta run, but I want you to think about this and I’ll come back later this afternoon. You need this, buddy. You’re in a slump. See ya.

Again in this dialogue you have a conversation between two business co-workers. Here Sean offers Jim some information that could help him recover from a streak of bad luck, but that could also get him into a lot of trouble. During his explanation, Sean uses the expression "belly up," when talking about the condition of Helix Inc. It is an expression commonly used in business and it usually means "to become bankrupt." The image of "belly up" is of an animal dying: for example, when a fish dies it floats upside down or belly up in the water. Therefore it is often used to describe a company that has been financially ruined or also it can be used to describe a plan or project that has failed: ex) Davis's restructuring proposal went belly up because the company president would not give the final approval. The president didn't like the idea of everyone, including himself, taking a pay cut.
