Chad calls his sister Felicity to check up on her after he discovers she has been ill.
F: Felicity
C: Chad
F: Hello?
C: Hey, sis. What’s this I hear about you being sick last week?
Mum said you were in hospital for a couple of days.
F: Yeah, no one’s quite sure what’s wrong at the moment. It’s
kind of freaky.
C: What happened?
F: I woke up in the middle of the night with these terrible stomach
cramps and the pain just kept getting worse so I called the
ambulance. By the time they got here I was in so much pain I
couldn’t walk.
C: That’s awful. So they couldn’t tell you anything at the
hospital?
F: Well, the doctors did a whole lot of tests but we’re still
waiting on the results. At one stage they knocked me out and
put a camera down my throat to have a look inside my stomach.
It was horrible.
C: It sounds it. Are you feeling any better now?
F: No, I’m still feeling pretty gross and it’s a struggle keeping
food down. Hopefully they’ll find out what’s wrong soon.
C: I hope so. Whatever you’ve got sounds pretty nasty.

It's kind of freaky.
（なんだか怖いわ。）
“freaky" は「異常な、気紛れな」という意味があるが、スラングで
「恐ろしい、怖い」という意味もある。“freak" は、「変人、異常な
現象・出来事・物・人」という意味の名詞で、「ひどく興奮・イライラ
する、神経質になる、おびえる」という意味の動詞になる。この「神経
質、おびえる」という意味から“freaky" の「恐ろしい」という意味
がきた。 また、“freak out" 「〜にびびる、〜に興奮する」という
フレーズもよく使われる。
ex. All this lightning and thunder in the middle of summer is
kind of freaky.
（この真夏に雷電があるなんて、なんだか怖いね。）

（うーん、先生がありとあらゆる検査をしたけど、まだ結果待ちよ。）
“wait on 〜" で「〜を待つ」になり、 “wait for 〜" と同じ意味。
文法的には正しくないが、人やものごとを待つ場合、会話でよく使わ
れ、最近、文章でも使われるようになった。
ex: I sent an inquiry to the company and I'm waiting on their
reply.
（会社に問い合わせして、回答待ちです。）

（ある時なんか、私に麻酔をかけて）
“knock out"は「失神させる、気絶させる、意識を失わせる」という
意味。日本語の「ノックアウト」と同じ意味。ここでは「麻酔をかけ
て眠らされた」ということ。
ex: He was knocked out in a fight.
（彼は喧嘩で、ＫＯされた。）
No, I'm still feeling pretty gross and it's a struggle keeping food down.
（いいえ、まだかなり気分が悪いし、食べ物を吐かないようにするのが
大変なの。）
“struggle + 動詞〜ing"は「必死で〜しようとする、〜しようと努力
する、〜しようと四苦八苦する」という意味。“struggle to + 動詞"
で、同じ意味になる。例えば、“it's a struggle keeping food down"
と“it's a struggle to keep food down"は同じ意味。名詞では「も
がき、奮闘、葛藤」などの意味がある。
ex: It's a struggle making ends meet.
（収入と支出の帳尻を合わせるのに苦労する。）

りだから、救急車を呼んだの。救急車が着いた時は、ものすごい痛みで
歩けなかったわ。
C: 大変だな。病院では何も教えてくれなかったの?
F: うーん、先生がありとあらゆる検査をしたけど、まだ結果待ちよ。 ある
時なんか、私に麻酔をかけて、お腹の中を見るために、のどにカメラを
入れたのよ。最悪だったわ。
C: 本当だな。少しは良くなったの?
F: いいえ、まだかなり気分が悪いし、食べ物を吐かないようにするのが大
変なの。早く、何が悪いのか見つけて欲しいわ。
C: そうだね。何にかかっているとしても、かなりひどそうだよ。
