Margot: Oh Zoe, don’t you love this dress? I’ve just got to have it!

Zoe: It’s gorgeous. But Margot, look at the price! It’s $280.

Margot: So?

Zoe: Well, you’ve already spent $500 on clothes today. What did
you do, strike gold or something?

Margot: No. This is called “fully utilising the economic prosperity
of your parents.”

Zoe: What, you’re spending their money?

Margot: Well, not exactly. I still don’t pay them any money for food
and board so basically everything I earn I can spend on myself!

Zoe: But Margot, you’re working full time now…

Margot: Exactly. Which means I’ve got quite a lot of money to spend!

Zoe: But don’t you feel bad not helping with the expenses?
I mean, I could understand you not paying when you were a student
simply because you had no source of income, but you’re getting a
salary now. I’ve been paying my parents $300 a month to cover
board and food ever since I started working.

Margot: Oh, Mother and Daddy have dropped hints about how I should be
contributing financially, but I just ignore them. I’m not going
to pay if I don’t have to. And there’s no way they’re going to
start making demands on me. I’ve got them wrapped around my little
finger.

Zoe: Well then, I envy you. What I would give to be able to buy $280
dresses, I tell you!

Margot: You know, I think I will buy this dress. I can wear it to next
week’s office party. And tell you what Zoe, to make up for you not
being able to splash out, I’ll buy you lunch!

Zoe: Sounds good to me!

“don’t you〜 ?” は普段「〜ないですか?」という意味で使われているが、“don’t you + 強い感情”を使うと「〜と思わない?」という意味になる。
この場合は、相手はきっと自分と同じように考えているだろうと思った時に相手の感想を確認する方法として使われている。“love”の他に“hate”、“abhor”、“detest” など、強い感情を表す言葉を使う。“like”など、どちらかというと強くない感情を使うと、 “don’t you like this dress?”「このドレスは好きじゃないですか?」という、上記の最初の意味になるので要注意。
“don’t you”の後で “just”や “absolutely” を入れると感情を強く伝えられる。Ex. Don’t you just abhor violence on TV?

“drop a hint”で「ちょっとほのめかす、ヒントを与える」という意味のイディオム。“hint at”、“give a hint”、“offer a hint”などの言い方もある。
Ex. She’s been dropping hints all week that she would like a ring for her birthday.

“to have someone wrapped around one’s little finger” で、「(人)〜を意のままに操る」という意味。“wrap”の代わりに、“twist”、“wind”など、似たような動詞を使うこともある。他にも “to have someone under one’s thumb”、“to have someone at one’s beck and call”、“to have someone eating out of one’s hand”など、色々な言い方がある。
Ex. Tessa is not the most intelligent woman in the world but she knows how to wrap men around her little finger.
