Scene 7-10 Time for a Change
No regrets
It is Saturday, and the salon has successfully completed its first day of business. The staff and their friends are gathered in the salon afterwards having a few drinks to celebrate. Miranda is talking to Jon.

Jon: Well, congratulations Miranda! You did it.
Miranda: We all did it! I couldn’t have managed it without the help of
everyone in this room. For a minute there I didn’t think we’d
make it, but you know, this shows what a great staff I have, not
to mention great friends.
Jon: I hope this means you don’t regret moving down here?
Miranda: I have no regrets at all! It’s been a lot of hard work so far,
and I’ve been pretty stressed out over the last few weeks, but the
feeling of accomplishment that I have today has made it all worth
it.
Jon: I’m glad to hear it. I would’ve felt bad if you’d been unhappy,
especially since it was me who gave you the hard-sell about moving
here.
Miranda: Oh no! I must admit I was pretty nervous about starting from
scratch in a new place, but I’m so happy I did it. And now I’m
looking forward to relaxing and settling into life here now that
the busiest part is over.
Jon: Great. Oh, by the way, this is for you.
Miranda: A telegram?
Jon: It’s from Blair. He was going to come and surprise you tonight
but his boss sent him out of town on business this weekend so he
couldn’t make it.
Miranda: Oh, that’s so sweet!
Jon: And if you’ll just come this way, there’s something else out back
for you.
Miranda: What? …Oh! Flowers! They’re gorgeous! Who are these from?
Jon: Me.
Miranda: Oh Jon, you shouldn’t have! These must have cost a fortune!
Jon: Hey, it’s a special occasion. Well, I don’t know about you, but
being around all these people has me exhausted. What do you say
we pop down the road and have a quiet celebratory drink?
Miranda: Sounds good to me!
Jon: Great! Let’s get out of here!

For a minute there I didn't think we'd make it,
(一瞬、間に合わないかと思ったわ。)
“make it”は「時間に間に合う」という意味。その他、「出世する、
何とか出席する、具合がよくなる、急いで立ち上がる、うまくいく、
成功する、無事にやり遂げる」という意味もある。
Ex: I was caught in traffic and didn't make it to the job
interview on time.
(渋滞で動けなくなったので、仕事の面接に間に合わなかった。)
I have no regrets at all!
(全然後悔なんてしてないわよ!)
“at all”は否定文で使う場合には、「全く〜ない、全然〜ない、
少しも〜ない、ちっとも〜ない」という意味になる。疑問文では「一体、
そもそも」、条件節では「いやしくも、仮にも」、肯定文では「とにかく、
まさか」という意味になる。
Ex: He is not shy at all.
(彼は全く恥ずかしがり屋ではない。)

(いまのところ、きつい仕事の連続)
“so far”は「今のところ、これまで、この程度まで」という意味。
他には、“till now”, “up to the present”, “up to this time”
という言い方もある。
Ex: I have only met her once so far, but I think she is very nice
person.
(これまで彼女には一回しか会ったことがないけど、彼女はとても
いい人だと思う。)
I would've felt bad if you'd been unhappy, especially since it was me who gave you the hard-sell about moving here.
(もし君が不幸せだったら、僕は悪いことをしたと思っただろうよ、特に、ここに引っ越すことを強引に押したのは、僕だからね。)
“hard-sell”は「押し売り、強引な販売(方法)」という意味。この
場合は、強引に勧めたという意味になる。また、「強引な販売を拒否
する人、困難な販売の仕事」という逆の意味もある。
“give someone the hard-sell”でよく使われる。
Ex: I hate companies that give you the hard-sell.
(押し売りをする会社がいやだ。)
his boss sent him out of town on business this weekend so he couldn't make it.
(今週末、上司が彼を出張に送ったから、来られなかったんだ。)
“out of town”は、「市外に、出張に出て、町を離れて、留守にして、
田舎に行って」という意味。“out of town on business”は「出張中」
という意味になる。
Ex: I'll be out of town on business next week.
(私は、来週出張でおりません。)
These must have cost a fortune!
(すごく高かったでしょ!)
“cost a fortune”は「莫大な金がかかる」という意味。“fortune”は
「財産、大金、富」という意味がある。他には、“cost a bomb”,
“cost a packet”, “cost a pretty penny”, “cost a arm a leg”
という言い方もある。
Ex: To be a horse owner costs a fortune.
(馬主でいるのは、莫大なお金がかかる。)

(ちょっと道を下って、静かな祝杯を上げるのはどう?)
“What do you say 〜?”は「〜はどうですか?、〜をどう思いますか?」
という意味。直訳すれば「〜に対して何を言いますか?」となり、
“What do you think of/about 〜?”, “Do you agree 〜?”と同じ
意味。また“What do you say?”で「こんにちは、元気?、調子は
どう?、何か変わったことあった?」などの意味で、挨拶するときに
使われることもある。
Ex: What do you say to seeing a movie?

M: 私達皆でやったのよ!この部屋にいる皆の助け無しでは、やり遂げられ
なかったわ。一瞬、間に合わないかと思ったわ。でもね、これが、
私がどんなに素晴らしいスタッフと、言うまでもなく、素晴らしい友達を
持っているかを明らかにしてるわ。
J: 君がここに越してきたことを、後悔していないっていう意味だと
良いけど?
M: 全然後悔なんてしてないわよ!いまのところ、きつい仕事の連続で、
この数週間かなりストレスが溜まってるけど、今日、私が感じている
この達成感は、全てを価値のあるものにしたわ。
J: それは良かった。もし君が不幸せだったら、僕は悪いことをしたと思った
だろうよ、特に、ここに引っ越すことを強引に押したのは、僕だからね。
M: そんな!新しい場所でゼロから始めることにかなり不安だったのは、
認めるけど、引っ越したことは、本当に嬉しいわ。もう一番忙しい部分は
終わりよ。今は、リラックスしてここでの生活に慣れることを楽しみに
してるの。
J: 良かった。おー、ところで、これは君にだよ。
M: 電報?
