A bit carried away
Six weeks have passed, and Cassie has finished writing her reports for Malcolm. She is at her reception desk, talking to Greg in the morning when he comes by to pick them up.

Cassie: Hi, Greg. I heard there was a bit of a scuffle in here
yesterday evening.
Greg: Yeah. A couple of teenagers who came in here to use the library
ended up in fisticuffs.
Cassie: What happened?
Greg: It seems one boy was in the library using one of the public
computers but left his seat to look for a book when the other
came in and started using the computer without permission.
Cassie: And that turned into a punch up?
Greg: Well, when the first boy came back, he found that the other boy
had erased the report he’d been working on.
Cassie: Ooh, I’m not surprised he spit the dummy then. Was there much
of a commotion?
Greg: Nah, they managed to break it up pretty quickly without too much
damage done.
Cassie: Morning Malcolm!
Malcolm: Hey Cassie! Greg.
Greg: Hi Malcolm. Well, I’d better get back to work. Catch ya later.
Cassie: See ya!
Malcolm: You have the reports?
Cassie: Yep. All done. Sorry, I got a bit carried away with the
comments at the end and ended up writing four to five pages for
each one. I hope you don’t mind.
Malcolm: Four to five PAGES?! It sounds like you’ve been busy. Let’s
have a look…
Cassie: The products were really good, but I thought of a few more ways
you could improve them. Not just the products themselves, but
packaging and stuff like that as well. A lot of the things I
wrote were probably irrelevant though, so just ignore anything
that sounds like crap to you.
Malcolm: This isn’t crap, Cassie. It’s really good. You’ve made some
really insightful points.
Cassie: Oh good! That’s a relief. I was a bit worried that I might have
gone overboard. But I got so excited at the chance to make
suggestions that once I started, I couldn’t stop.
Malcolm: Well, this is going to keep me busy for the next few hours!
And I’ve got something else to keep you busy too.
Cassie: Another tester’s pack! Great! What is it this time?
Malcolm: Make-up. We’re putting out a new line of foundations, both
liquid and powder. And there are some lipstick samples in there
as well from our new sparkle series. The procedure is the same
as last time. Use the products for a few weeks then fill out
the reports.
Cassie: Sure thing!

(ここに図書館を使いに来た十代の子達二人が、最後に殴り合いになったんだよ。)
“fisticuffs”は「殴り合い、乱闘」という意味。その他、“blows”,
“handicuffs”, “fight”, “punch-out”, “physical altercation”
などの言い方もある。“fist”は「握りこぶし、げんこつ」という意味
がある。
Ex: Pete and Simon came to fisticuffs.
(ピートとサイモンは、殴り合いのけんかになった。)
And that turned into a punch up?
(それで、それが殴り合いになっちゃったの?)
“turn into 〜”は「(人・物・事が)[〜から/〜に] 変わる、なる」
という意味。その他、“turn”を使ったイディオムには、“turn
against”「敵意を抱く、反抗する、敵対する」、“turn in favour of”
「好意を抱く」、“turn from”「(場所など)から背を向けて離れる、
(観察など)をやめる、断念する」、“take turns”「交替でする」など
がある。
Ex: Mum, when will this caterpillar turn into a butterfly?

(まあ、じゃあ、彼が怒っても当然ね。)
“I'm not surprised” は「驚かない」という意味だが、このような
状況の場合には、言われたことを肯定して、「そうだろうね、当然だ、
そう言われても不思議ではない、無理も無い」という意味になる。また、
“spit the dummy”は「怒る、かっとなる、腹を立てる」という意味。
Ex: You've been eating so much lately, I'm not surprised you've
gained weight.
(最近あまりにも食べているから、体重が増えて当然だよ。)

“get carried away”は「調子に乗る、夢中になる、我を忘れる、興奮
する」という意味。その他、“go into gear”, “get full of oneself”
“elated”, “break loose”などの言い方もある。
Ex: Don't get carried away.

(キャシー、意味無いなんてことないよ。)
“crap”は「無意味な、愚かな考え、たわごと、ゴミ、がらくた、
馬鹿馬鹿しいこと、価値のないもの」という意味。動詞では「めちゃ
めちゃにする、糞をする」という意味がある。あまりきれいな言葉では
ないので、親しい友人の間でのみ使うこと。もっときれいな言葉で表現
すると、“rubbish, not very good, nonsense”などがある。
Ex: You left the house key behind!? Crap!
(家の鍵を忘れたの!?馬鹿だな!)

(やり過ぎたかもしれないと、ちょっと心配してたの。)
“go overboard”は「やり過ぎる、夢中になり過ぎる、深入りし過ぎる」
という意味。“overboard”は「船外に、船から水中に」という意味。
その他、“go”を使ったイディオムには、“go too far”「(冗談・
無作法などが)度を越す」、“go back on”「(約束など)を破る、
(人を)裏切る」、“go beyond 〜”「(〜の範囲)を超える、
〜にまさる」、“let oneself go”「身なりを構わなくなる、
はめをはずす」などがある。
Ex: I went overboard snowboarding and broke my arm.
(スノーボードでやり過ぎて、腕を折った。)

C: ええ。出来てるわ。ごめんなさいね、最後のコメントで、ちょっと調子
