Dialog

Maria is talking to her friend Sharon about her boyfriend, Ken.

Maria: Sharon! Ken is such a bastard!

Sharon: Oh Maria! Calm down…what has he done to you?

Maria: It was supposed to be our date last night, but in the morning he called and said he wouldn’t be able to make it…because he said he was so busy and he tried to sort out things a lot quicker but he just couldn’t…

Sharon: Well, if it’s work, I don’t think you can blame him…

Maria: Last night meant so, so special to me! We haven’t seen each other so long, and there was something he and I needed to talk about, and it was the very night, 5 years ago, when we started seeing each other! Some time ago, when I was really busy and he said he wanted to see me, I slipped out of the office to see him. I returned to the office afterward and stayed up all night to finish up. Oh, he treats me like his bimbo! He assumes I’m always there for him, no matter what!

Sharon: Oh, Maria, you’re not a half-time show…listen, I know how you feel, but I don’t think he did it on purpose, did he? It’s not that he didn’t try hard enough…is it?

Maria: He could have done better, though…he could have sent me flowers or a bottle of champagne to compensate…

Sharon: Men’s romantic acts and words can’t be trusted. Oh sweetie, please cheer up.

Explanations

I slipped out of the office to see him.

Oh, he treats me like his bimbo!

It's not that he didn't try hard enough…is it?

It's not that…

He could have done better, though…

could have done betterは「もっとうまくできたかもしれない」すなわち「やりようがあっただろう」ということ。

Oh sweetie, please cheer up.
