Patty: Did you hear about Doug’s hernia?
Mike: No. How did he do that?
Patty: It seems that he was horsing around with some of the guys after rugby practice the other day and tackled someone the wrong way and hurt his back.
Mike: Ouch! Hernias don’t mend easily either. He’s going to be out of action for a while.
Patty: No kidding. His rugby coach isn’t too happy about the whole situation. Their team just made the national playoffs, so he’s going to miss the whole tournament.
Mike: I bet Doug didn’t take that news too well. It’s always been his goal to make it to the nationals.
Patty: Yeah. I bet he’s kicking himself!

「この間のラグビーの練習のあと、ダグは何人かとふざけていた」
"horse around"は、「馬が暴れまわる」というイメージから、「乱暴にふざける」という意味。インフォーマル表現です。
ex: I talked to my son about why he horses around in practice.
（どうして練習中にふざけるのかと、息子に訊いてみた）
He's going to be out of action for a while.
「しばらく動けなくなるね」
"out of action"というのは、文字からイメージできるように「（人や物が）動かなくなって」という意味。怪我をしたりダメージを受けたりした結果動けなくなる、というニュアンスです。
ex: My washing machine have been out of action for a couple of days.
（洗濯機が、ここ数ヶ月動かない）
Their team just made the national playoffs
「チームは全国大会まで勝ち進んだ」
この場合の"make"は「成功する、うまくいく」という意味。すぐ後に出てくる"to make it to the nationals"も同じ意味で使われています。
ex: Argentina have only once made the final in 1981 when they lost to the United States.
（アルゼンチンは1981年の一度だけ決勝戦に進んだことがあるが、アメリカに敗れてる）
I bet he's kicking himself!
「きっと嘆いてるね」
"kick oneself"で「自責の念にかられる」。直訳すると「自分を蹴飛ばす」。失敗したことについて、自分自身に腹を立てている状態を表わします。
ex: I bet Steve is kicking himself for turning down that job.
（スティーブはあの仕事を断って後悔しているでしょうね）
