L: Jeff, let’s go out and do something different this weekend.
I’m sick of pottering around at home.

J: But honey, the football season starts this weekend! I was looking
forward to sitting back with a few cans of beer and catching the
Eagles’ first game.

L: Why do you have to be such a couch potato? You spend every
weekend glued to the TV watching whatever sport happens to be on.
What does it matter if it’s the first game of the season?
There’s half a year of games to go after that. You’re not going
to miss much by not seeing one.

J: What are you talking about! This game will set the tone for the
whole season! How can I miss that!

L: If you want to see it so much, why don’t you videotape it? I’m
sick of having our entire social schedule ruled by your TV viewing
requirements.

J: Videotape?! Lisa, the whole point is being able to watch the game
live! It’s not the same if you don’t watch it in real time!
Besides, if I don’t catch the game you know I’m going to spend
the whole afternoon worrying about the result.

L: Oh, I give up! You’re unbearable! Go and watch your precious
football. I’ll go and catch a movie by myself or something.

Why do you have to be such a couch potato?

「なんでそんなにカウチポテトなの？」
「カウチポテト」と日本語にもなっていますが、もともとの意味は
「ソファ(couch)に寝そべって、ポテト・チップを食べながらテレビ
を見ているだけの人」という意味。そこから転じて、「怠け者、テレ
ビばかり見てる人」という意味にもなります。
