F: Look Edie, there’s a photo in the paper of that new hotel they’ve
built on the foreshore. What an eyesore!
E: Oh, you’re right! It’s ghastly! Why on earth did the city
council give the developers permission to put that thing up? It’s
a blot on the landscape.
F: Who in their right mind would stay in that thing? You’d think
they would have designed something with a little bit more class.
That’s nothing but a monstrosity of concrete and glass.
E: And on our beautiful foreshore too! You’d think they would have
gone with a design that blended more into the landscape.
F: It’s outrageous. They should have given the public a say in this.
E: Too right. It doesn’t do anything for the city’s image at all.
F: You know, I think I’m going to write a letter to the paper about
this. It’s appalling that the council can give permission for
things like this to be built. What is this city coming to?

「なんて目ざわりなんだ！」
“eyesore"を直訳すると、「目が痛い」となるが、これで「（目が痛くなるほど） 醜い、目障り」という意味。
ex. With all this rubbish, this beach has turned into an eyesore.
（こんなゴミがちらがっているせいで、砂浜は目障りになった。）

「いったいなぜ市の評議会は開発者たちに建築許可を与えたんだろう？」
“on earth" は疑問詞の直後につく「いったい」という意味のイディオム。
Ex: What on earth is he worrying about?
（彼はいったい何を悩んでいるんだ？）
You'd think they would have designed something with a little bit more class.
「もうちょっと気品のあるものをデザインすべきだっただろうにね。」
“〜 would have done" は、「（もし…であれば）〈人・物・事が〉…だ
った[した]であろうに」という仮定的意味。
“class" のここでの意味は形容詞的に「気品のある、格調高い」となる。
Ex: If I had known about your move, I would have helped you.
（もし私があなたの引越しを知っていたなら、手伝ったのに。）
Gwyneth Paltrow is an actress with a lot of class.
（グウィネス・パルトローは、品のある女優です。）
It's appalling that the council can give permission for things like this to be built.
「建築について評議会がこんなことに許可を与えることができるなんてぞっとするよ。」
“appalling" は「(人を)ぞっとさせる、恐ろしい」の意味。“terrible,
ghastly, dreadful"という言い方もある。
Ex: His singing voice is appalling.
