D: Hey Jen, I got a quote from the builder today.
J: Great! How much is it?
D: It’s not too bad actually. Only $20,000 to remodel the bathroom
and add on an extra room.
J: That’s great! We’ll have some money left to fix up some other
stuff too. You know, the Johnson’s at number 18 have that
beautiful new stone fence. Why don’t we get one of those?
D: Honey, they cost an arm and a leg! I was talking to Rick Johnson
the other day and he said it cost them a small fortune to put
theirs up.
J: But sweetie, everybody has them now, and think of the extra
security it’ll give us.
D: Look, they might be trendy now, but what happens in three years
when they’re passe? Then you’re stuck with a monstrosity in
front of your house that’s too expensive to pull down. No Jen,
the fence we have now is fine. We don’t need a new one.
J: Yeah, yeah. We’ll see.

「他も修理するのに、お金が余るわ。」
“fix up" は、「〜を宿泊させる、（人）のために手配する、争いなどを解決する、まとめる」などの意味があるが、ここでは、「修理する、手入れをする」という意味になる。
Ex. We're fixing up the kitchen now so the house is a mess.
（今台所の修理をしているから家はゴチャゴチャしてるの。）
Honey, they cost an arm and a leg!
「ジェン、あれすごく高いよ！」
“cost an arm and a leg" で、「法外な値段、大変な出費、ばか高い」という意味のイディオム。 "cost" の部分を “charge" 「請求する」または、 "pay" 「支払う」に変えることも出来る。
Ex. I'd love to stay at Hotel Miracosta but it costs an arm and a leg.
（ホテルミラコスタに泊まりたいんですが、すごく高いです。）
…and he said it cost them a small fortune to put theirs up.
「あの門をつけるために、ものすごくお金がかかったって言ってたよ。」
“a small fortune" は、「大金、一財産」という意味。“cost"または, “spend"を前につけて「大金を費やす」、「大金がかかる」という表現も覚えておくと便利でしょう。
Ex. It's going to cost a small fortune to get the car fixed.
（車を修理するのにかなりお金をかかるはずだ。）
Then you're stuck with a monstrosity in front of your house that's too expensive to pull down.
「大きな門を家の前に抱えて、取り壊すにはお金がかかりすぎるよ。」
“pull down" にはいくつかの意味があるが、ここでは、「取り壊す」という意味になる。また、「コンピューターのメニューを表示する」はよく使われる表現で、その他、「引きおろす、値段などを引き下げる」などの意味もある。
Ex. The old building was pulled down because it was dangerous.
（古い建物が危険だったため、取り壊された。）

を家の前に抱えて、取り壊すにはお金がかかりすぎるよ。だめよ、ジェ
ン、今ある門で十分よ。新しいのはいらないよ。
