K: Kirstie
O: Kirstie, you’ll never guess what some idiots did down at the
marina today.
K: What?
O: Well, this group of pretentious lawyers from up north pulled in
on this brand new launch, right, and started complaining that
there was something wrong with their boat.
K: Engine problems?
O: That’s what they were harping on about, but Jack and I took one
look at them and realised they didn’t know the first thing about
boating.
K: That obvious, huh?
O: Anyway, we checked the engine and it was running perfectly, so we
started checking all the other parts, but after half an hour we
still found nothing wrong, so finally I decided to dive underneath
the launch to see if something was caught there.
K: And?
O: And you’ll never guess what I found!
K: What?
O: The boat was still attached to the damn trailer!
K: You’re joshing me!
O: I’m serious! I laughed so hard I almost drowned!
K: That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Some people really
don’t have a clue!

Well, this group of pretentious lawyers from up north pulled in on this brand new launch
「それがさ、都会から気取った弁護士の団体が来て、新品のボートに乗っ
たわけ」
"pull in" には、さまざまな意味があるが、ここでは「入る、乗る」とい
う意味。反対は"pull out" になる。その他、「列車・船などが到着す
る、人・車などが止まる、カフェに立ち寄る、ドライブイン・給油所な
どに立ち寄る」などの意味もある。
Ex. She hit a BMW when she was pulling into the carpark.
（駐車場に車を入れていた時にＢＭＷにぶつかった。）

「そうじゃないかって彼らは何度も繰り返し言ってたけど、」
"harp on〜" は、「〜をくどくど繰り返す、同じことを言う」という意味
のイディオム。
この表現を使ったことわざがある。"Don't keep harping on the past"
「既住はとがめず」、"Not good is it to harp on the frayed string"
「すり切れた弦を弾くな⇒同じ話ばかりするな」、"Harp not for ever
on the same string"「始終同じ事ばかりするな」などもあわせて覚えて
おくと便利でしょう。
Ex. I wish you wouldn't keep harping on.

「すぐにわかったのね？」
"obvious"は、「明らかに」という意味で、ここでは会話の流れから
「すぐにわかる、一目 瞭然」という意味合いを含んで表現する。
Ex. It was so obvious that he was lying.
（彼が、嘘をついていたことは明らかだった。）

「冗談でしょ！」
"joshing" は動詞で、「からかう、冷やかす、(悪意のない)冗談を言う」
という意味。名詞は"josh"になる。"I'm just joshing"は、「冗談だよ」
という表現で、"I'm just kidding"も同じ意味になる。
Ex. Stop joshing me!
（冗談はやめてよ！）

「訳分からない人達っているもんね！」
ここでは、"have a clue" 「分かる、理解する」に否定が付いて、"don't
have a clue"、"have no clue"「見当がつかない、全く分からない」とい
う表現をしている。
Ex. I don't have a clue what time he'll be back.
（彼が何時に帰ってくるのか全然分からない。）

O:とにかく、僕らがエンジンをチェックすると問題なく動き出して、他の部
分も全部チェックしてみたんだけど、30分経っても何処にも異常なんて見
つからなくてさ。それで、最終的にボートの下に潜って何か挟まっていな
いか見ることにしたんだ。
K:それで?
O:そしたら、信じられないものを見つけてしまったんだよ!
K:何?
O:ボートがトレーラーに繋がったままだったんだぜ!
K:冗談でしょ!
O:本当だよ!あんまり笑い過ぎて、もう少しで溺れそうになったよ!
K:こんなに馬鹿げた話、今まで聞いたことないわ。訳分からない人達ってい
るもんね!
