M: Mary
S: Did you see Nicki today?
M: No, why?
S: I got a call from her this morning. Keith proposed to her last
night.
M: That’s great news! She must be over the moon!
S: Yeah, she did sound pretty happy.
M: Have they set a date yet?
S: I don’t think they have officially, but Nicki was saying that
seeing their birthdays are so close together in July they might
have the wedding then. She said it’s probably the only way
Keith will remember their wedding anniversary.
M: She’s not even married yet and she’s thinking about
anniversaries already! That sounds like Nicki. Your mother
must be pretty happy too.
S: She’s thrilled to bits. You should have heard her going on
about it. Oh, and it sounds like she’s going for the quinella.
She spent an hour this afternoon lecturing me about how you and
I ought to be taking the plunge too.
M: Now that sounds like an idea!
S: Don’t get too many ideas. One wedding this year is going to
be quite enough for me!

"over the moon" は「大喜びする」という意味のイディオム。
特にブリティッシュイングリッシュでよく使われる。その他に、
"walking on air", "on cloud nine", "grinning from ear
to ear", "tickled pink", "on top of the world", "thrilled
to bits" という言い方もある。
Ex. I was over the moon when I heard I'd got the job.
（就職が決まって、すごく嬉しかった。）

（母さんは、 ずっとそのことを喋りっ放しだったから、聞けば良かっ
たのに。）
"go on about" で「〜についてとりとめなくしゃべる、喋りまくる」
という意味。ほかに "prattle on", "gush over", "yak away"
という言い方もある。
Ex. She went on and on about how wonderful Yon-sama is.
（彼女は、ヨン様の素晴らしさについてずっと喋り捲っていた。）
it sounds like she's going for the quinella.
（母さんは俺も結婚させたいみたいだよ。）
"quinella" は、競馬の表現で、「連勝式（1着・2着を当ること）」
という意味。ここでは、その「連勝」はスティーブと姉の両方の
結婚のことになる。 "going for the quinella" というのは、
二つのゴールインを目標にしているということになる。
Ex. She's just got a great new job, now if she can find a
boyfriend she'll have the quinella.
（彼女は、すごくいい仕事に就いたから、あと彼氏が見つかったら
完璧だ。）
She spent an hour this afternoon lecturing me about how you and I ought to be taking the plunge too.
（今日の午後一時間、僕たちも結婚するべきだってお説教されたよ。）
"take the plunge" は、「思い切って大変なこと・リスクのあること・
嫌なことをする、思い切って結婚する」という意味のイディオム。
"plunge" は「飛び込む、急落」という意味で、"take the plunge"
は、思い切って大変なことをすることを高い所から飛び込むことに
例えている表現。
Ex. I took the plunge and asked her out on a date.
（思い切って彼女をデートに誘った。）
