P: Peggy
S: Simon
P: Hey Si. How did your half-marathon go yesterday?
S: I came in second.
P: Hey that’s great! But you don’t sound too happy about it.
What’s up?
S: I was that close to winning Peg! Chris and I were neck and neck
going down the home straight, but then he went and put on a huge
spurt in the last twenty metres and ended up winning by a head.
P: Oh, that’s too bad. But you did well to stick that close to him.
S: You don’t understand Peg. It’s the closest anyone’s ever been to
beating Chris in the last five years! I had it in the palm of my
hand! I can’t believe I lost it in the final spurt.
P: It’s not all bad, hon. At least you know now that you can put
forward a good challenge. If you keep up the training, there’s
no reason why you shouldn’t beat him in the next race.
S: Yeah, I suppose so. I guess I’ll just have to try harder next
time.

（ゴール前の直線ではクリスと俺が接戦だった）
"neck and neck"は「互角で、負けず劣らず、首の差で、接戦で」
とういう意味。競馬での接戦の様子から、出来た表現で、レースで、
選手がぎりぎり首の差ぐらいしかないときに使う。他には、"nip and
tuck", "head to head", "a dead heat" "in a virtual tie"
などがある。試合で競争するスポーツで、接戦のときは、 “evenly
matched", “all square", “close contest",“close match",
“tight contest" という言い方がある。
Ex: It's the last lap of the men's 800 metre freestyle and
Thorpe and Tracy are neck in neck.
（男子800メートルの自由形の最後の一周で、ソープとトレイシー
が接戦だ。）

（でも、彼にそんなにぴったりくっついていったのは、よくやったじゃない。）
"stick close to 〜"は「〜にぴったりくっついている」という意味。
"stick" は名詞で「棒、杖、棒状の物」という意味だが、その他動詞
では「貼り付ける、くっつく、突き刺す、我慢する、続く、動けなくなる」
などの意味もある。
Ex: The bodyguards stick close to Tom Cruise.
（ボディーガードは、トム・クルーズにぴったりくっついている。）
I had it in the palm of my hand!
（それを、俺は自分の手中に握ったんだ！）
"have 〜 in the palm of one's hand"は「〜を手中に握る、
〜を意のままにする、〜を完全に掌握する」という意味。"palm"
は「手のひら」という意味。直訳から、意味は連想できる。日本語と
同じ表現。
Ex: We had victory in palm of our hand.
（私達は、勝利を手中に握った。）

は、相手にいい挑戦ができるって分かったじゃない。もしあなたが
トレーニングを続ければ、次のレースで彼を打ち負かせないはずが
ないわ。
S: うん、そうだな。この次はもっと頑張るしかないな。
